Since that time, however, Rick Warren and Barack Obama have been attacked by pro-homosexual forces, who strongly object to Warren's views on gay marriage. Because of the attacks from the left, conservatives have circled the wagons and have rallied around Warren.
Moreover, Obama has had his, "Sister Souljah" moment. By having the guts to stand up to a Democratic base constituency, he looks good to most mainstream Americans, and might even score some points with some young evangelicals.
Earlier today, I was on FOX News discussing this strange development.
If we all can agree that Rick Warren is a giant douche, certainly we can find more common ground..it's only a hop skip and slither to Homer Simpbaugh hisself!

i have considered warning you guys, but i figure you wouldn't listen anyway …
i do get a little joy out of watching you ease closer to the waterfall in your barrel...

(you have been here before...)
Grand Old Party (GOP), was founded in 1854 by a coalition composed of former members of the Whig, Free-Soil, and Know-Nothing parties, along with northern Democrats who were dissatisfied with their party's conciliatory attitude on the slavery issue.
WHIG PARTY, one of the two dominant political parties in the U.S. from the mid-1830s to the mid-1850s. The party was formed about 1834 by members of the defunct National Republican party and others opposed to the policies of President Andrew Jackson. It was composed of many factions, united only in opposition to the Democratic party.
(ankle biters)-still loyal obstruct – I mean opposition
FREE-SOIL PARTY, American political party organized in 1848 on a platform opposing the extension of slavery. The growing conflict between proslavery and antislavery forces in the U.S. was intensified by the acquisition of new territories from Mexico and the ensuing argument over whether or not slavery would be permitted in those territories. The defeat of the Wilmot Proviso, which was intended to prevent the extension of slavery, and the struggle over it in Congress brought the conflict to a head; the refusal of both the Whig and Democratic parties to endorse the principles of the proviso convinced opposition groups of the need for a new party. The major groups involved in the organization of the Free-Soil party at a convention in Buffalo, N.Y., in 1848 were the abolitionist Liberty party, the antislavery Whigs, and a radical faction of the New York Democrats, the Barnburners, who had broken with the state party when it came under control of the conservative Hunkers.
(guess who these ankle biters sound like? replace slavery with their issue) i won't name them (*whispering* American Taliban ;-) then like now…a good cause with terrible methods to the means, which saps the “good” from the means to their desired end
KNOW-NOTHINGS, in American history, popular name of a secret political party that existed from 1849 to about 1860. The party organized in clandestine societies that discriminated against immigrants and members of the Roman Catholic church. Such societies included the Order of the Sons of America in Pennsylvania and the Order of the Star Spangled Banner in New York. The chief aims of the party were to prevent foreign-born citizens from holding political office and to check foreign influences and ideas.
(guess who these appropriately name ankle biters sound like?) - birthers! ROTFLMAO These guys are masters of opposites, conspiracy theories & lies…you know who you are…;-)
back from whence ye came!...LOL
you guys really should read more...
now for you reasonable folks surrounded by this coalition of the wicked & stupid...
you may find that you will be a welcomed addition to the growing Blue Dog & intelligentsia among the Party of Jefferson - formerly the Democratic-Republican Party ;-) hyperbolic link
*hint- he is on his way to Ayatollah (just as soon as he can get the folks with "the gay" to put on their metaphorical Burka's ;-)

I actually agree with Matt's basic point here - but to compare Rick Warren to Billy Graham? I don't recall Graham ever calling gay people pedophiles. Maybe that is what Graham truly believes, tough to say, but at least he keeps his mouth shut about it, something that a media hound like Warren cannot do.

Well, it would seem that, at least originally, the Republican Party was progressive in the sense that it was anti-slavery (it was created in 1854 in opposition to the Kansas-Nebraska Act that would have allowed the expansion of slavery into Kansas).
Republicans had understood that to become an industrial nation, America needed as fully mobile, preferably docile labor supply. Hence their emphasis on "Free Soil, Free Labor, Free Men". The problem with slavery was that it 'immobilized' a vast supply of labor into non-industrial activities. In addition, freed labor potentially represented an extension of the market for the manufactured goods produced by Northern industries.
The choice of the name "Republican" was meant to indicate that the party was the carrier of "republican" beliefs about civic virtue, and opposition to aristocracy and corruption. A somewhat cynical interpretation would be that, to the extent that slave owners were the so-called Southern 'aristrocrats' and that slavery was an impediment to industrial development, aristocracy and corruption had to be equated in the political discourse.

As you might recall, about a week ago I posted a blog about how some conservatives would be turned off by Rick Warren's decision to give the invocation at Barack Obama's Inauguration.
****************
Yes, you were wrong then and you're wrong now.
This is nothing. It means nothing. It's a fat guy with a goatee who is going to get up and say a few words about God and that will be the end of it. The only people who give a rat's behind about this guy are the perpetually offended on either side of the spectrum. They're a small, vocal minority with way too much time on their hands and no clue as to how to make proper use of it.
If that's your target audience, so be it.
Rotten fruit draws gnats. Enjoy the buzz.
Oh, and Merry Xmas.

ok, so I agree with Matt here. I checked in today thinking I would have a chance to vent against conservative ignorance, but whatever, it's Christmas. I think those folks angered about Warren need to get a life. Had any of them paid attention to the campaign, they would probably understand why it makes such wonderful, symmetrical sense to pick Warren for this, and also they might glimpse some of the potential benefits for the nation. Too bad I can't just zap them and make them shut up.
