Obama Says Illinois Deserves Taint-Free Government

President-Elect Barack Obama's transition office just released the following statement:(via email)
"Roland Burris is a good man and a fine public servant, but the Senate Democrats made it clear weeks ago that they cannot accept an appointment made by a governor who is accused of selling this very Senate seat. I agree with their decision, and it is extremely disappointing that Governor Blagojevich has chosen to ignore it. I believe the best resolution would be for the Governor to resign his office and allow a lawful and appropriate process of succession to take place. While Governor Blagojevich is entitled to his day in court, the people of Illinois are entitled to a functioning government and major decisions free of taint and controversy," said President-elect Obama.
Here's hoping Burris kept his receipt.

Of course, removing the taint could be a long, painful process unless Blagojevich decides to resign. Stuck right between two unpleasant alternatives, the Democrats find themselves in an uncomfortable, ill-defined area as well. It will be tough, politically, to resist calls for a special election, but a sure-thing appointment by Blago's eventual successor is much preferable.

You've got to feel a little bit bad for Roland Burris. Blagojevich had to know the appointment would be a non-starter, so why put the guy through this? I guess, as taints go, Blagojevich represents both extremes very well.

Now, about those inaugural balls...

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.
