The most gripping performance at last night's star-studded Kennedy Center Honors was turned in by someone who never audibly uttered a word. (And no, I'm not talking about President Bush who was his typical checked-out, slumped-over self during the show.)
I'm talking, of course, about honoree Barbra Streisand, high priestess of the American Song, who throughout the evening rendered invaluable and infallible verdicts on the gala's performances. To watch her reactions was to witness Trial by Streisand. (On this Supreme Court, there is only one Justice.)
We must remember that Streisand is not, as her pedestrian intro defined her (an intro read off of note cards by Queen Latifah) simply a singer/actress/director. She is more than a skills set, more than a "multi-talented performer." Yes, she has a miraculous singing instrument. But at her core she is a master interpreter: She connects completely with her material, which is why you can't stop watching her when she sings softly or when she belts.
She is, in other words, everything that American Idol is not. And last night she stood in stoic defiance: the one true singer never to be confused with the false idol of American Idol!
Let's get down to brass tacks: During the tribute to her, she was unimpressed. It started off with Idina Menzel, Tony-winner for Wicked. Let me be clear: Idina Menzel is a tremendous singer and a terrific actress, but she tried to out-belt Barbra which is:
Then came Beyonce (who I suspect was lip-synching). Everyone loves Beyonce and she's already proven that she's capable of achieving greatness. (Someone should open a store called Bed, Bath and Beyonce, to sell Beyonce-related merchandise.) But her performance of "The Way We Were" petered out. By its ended she sounded ... disconnected. She simply hasn't lived enough to sing about "the way she was" convincingly.
Beyonce does have an impeccable sense of decorum. Her dramatic thank-you at the end sent chills down my spine.
Beyonce (curtseying): It's an honor to sing for you, Miss Streisand. Thank you.
Barbra simply nodded -- then granted Beyonce her freedom!
After that came Ne-Yo covering one of Streisand's undersung gems, "Lover Come Back to Me":
My only complaint: why the hell wasn't I one of the back-up dancers?
The best performance of the night, no contest: Bettye LaVette's master class in singing -- her unforgettable rendition of "Reign O'er Me," in tribute to honorees Pete Townshend and Roger Daltry (begins at 2:55):
Barbra renders her only spoken verdict: "Fantastic."
As for the rest of the show ... George Jones is, of course, a great great artist. Bush chose to sit next to him, I suspect for political reasons. I doubt that Bush has any special appreciation or insight into Jones' art. Having the tired Laura Bush give the intro (totally inappropriate, given the shout-out to her husband at what is supposed to be a non-political event) was meant to signal that the Bushes are real Americans. Message: Hollywood may hate them, but that's because they're country folk!
Plans to have Laura Bush sing "Stand By Your Man" to the President were apparently scrapped.
Fun fact: I own a Martin Guitar, an autographed gift from George Jones himself. I was a fan of his breakfast sausage ("All pork and no possum!") and plugged it on The Today Show.
He also sent me a crate of frozen sausage in thanks.
So how does a master deliver a song? Here you go (no lip synch and only two cuts!):
Some may not like her politics, but bar none, Babs is the best when it comes to singing. Happy New Year Mo!

I know you said "hasn't lived enough," not "hasn't lived long enough." Still, Babs was 31 when TWWW came out, and Beyonce is 27 now, not a big diff. And frankly, what Babs has "lived" *since* then is the life of a star, hardly anything "too painful to remember" or whatever other "memories" the song is supposed to be about. I'm not sure how much more than Beyonce she had "lived" (other than the four years chronologically) before then either.
If you want to say Beyonce's emotional connection to the songs she sings pales before Barbra's, fair enough. But I think that's due more to differences in, uh, talent (or possibly genius in Babs's case) than how much either has "lived."

Barbara's segment was the best of the Kennedy Center ceremony, but I agree, Beyonce lip-synced her entire performance. Barbara seemed disappointed that Beyonce didn't do it without Memorex!

ok, i think you were right that the people's performances definately weren't very good, but i dont think it was fair of you to say things like idina was trying to "out-belt" someone. how the hell do you know that, mr. universe? you're acting like you know everything about what's going on inside the performer's and streisand's heads. trust me, you dont know everything, and acting like you do makes you seem arrogant, annoying, and naive. it pisses me off when people act like that. you might be thinking that its your place as a writer to analyz things like this, but that's not even what you're doing. you're saying everything like it's a fact, and its obnoxious.

Always loved Babs. But she is too controlling. Judy was not controlling and did not get jealous of any singers who could sing as well as her. Barbra forgets dueting with Judy on Judy's show. Mendel is good , but not for DROMP. I guess Babs feels threatened by other female singers who are younger than her and belt like her. That must be why Linda Eder was not asked to sing her Kiss a@s version of DROMP, which brings down the house at all her concerts. I know I've seen her live 10 times and she is an amazingly gifted, under rated singer , who is long overdue for some recognization Babs obviously had approval of who ssng for her. Marvin Hamslich works with Babs and works frequently with Linda. In fact he just did a series of concerts at the Kennedy Center with Linda this past October. And on Linda's website , it was announced that she is doing more with Marvin in 2009. So of course hecould have mentioned Linda to her. But, Babs must feel threatened, hence no Linda. What a pity, the national audience did not get the chance to hear her mind blowing , jar dropping version of DROMP>

and Eric Clapton and Bob Marley needed to shoot more sheriffs, I suppose.
Man, fans! The word is short for 'fanatic'. If it's your favorite person be it Ol' red eyes or Iggy Pop, only you, whoever you are, are the authority on your personal settings in the fandom folder.
It has nothing to do with skill, which can be quantified, or talent, which can't, or feeling, which is always negotiable including feeling like delivering unfeelingly to get a blase or insouciant vibe if the artist or a&r person thinks it's called for.
There is never any argument. If Boxcar Willie is your guy, he's the best that ever was or will be, and if you think John Coltrane sucked maggots, then he sucked maggots.
There is absolutely no one who is a greater authority on your personal taste than you, whoever you are, and all the back and forth over purely subjective metaphoric shit is amusing to someone who's been in the biz, but I hate to see anyone take it personally.
Everyone owns their taste in music, and they get to choose who they're a fan of. Proselytizing is pointless if someone disagrees, and you can't trump them with logic or stagger them with statistics.
It's what you feel, and what they feel.
Evaluating a person's performance quantitatively is another matter, but you have to be a peer in the performance arena of a person you're taking inventory of to be taken seriously and even then it's difficult to stand apart from personal opinion.
So if babs is your gal, she's the best, and if Yoko Ono's your gal, well, she's a mofo to you and you're entitled.

The mets? oh, lordy! Outside of that, you come off as pretty damn smart. those anagrams blew me away!
When I was a kid in the fifties, I loved the Kansas City Athletics. I think most high school teams could have beaten them before they moved to Oakland. the big year was when they beat the Senators out for next to last.

Well, if they hadn't moved, you (rather than residents of Oakland) would have had the Mets to thank for allowing them to acquire a major contributor to their subsequent improvement.
Finally, Finally, Finally - Mo Rocca nailed this one!!!!!!
Look, it would be hard for anyone to musically pay tribute to Streisand - she is so uniquely herself - her talent is GINORMOUS - but the performers they picked to honor her were subpar at best.
I have seen plenty of wonderful Kennedy Center Tributes and this was painful for both Barbra and her fans - she deserved MUCH MUCH MORE.
I know these young performers tried , but the truth is - this was a lackluster tribute and seemed insincere. Barbra is known for her candor and truthful nature - she seemed a bit uncomfortable - perhaps it is the nature of tributes - she truly hates being "fussed" over in this way - but I think she was wondering - humn "Morgan got Clint and Denzel and the best they could do was Queen Latifa? - Glenn Close makes sense - I mean atleast she truly worked with Barbra - but the rest - what was the point?
In all, she should have be honored years ago - after The Concert '94 or atleast this year 2009 - so Obama could give this to her. But whatever, we do not sit on The Kennedy Center Board.
But - if these performances proved anything, it is hard to beat the real deal - I would not have wanted to belt out a Streisand tune in front of the lady - herself - lol. So for that, I give these guys and gals credit - but I agree with Mr. Rocca - you just can't top the ending of Funny Girl - and no one will ever Rain on Streisand's Parade!!!!!!

You are absolutely right! MAN, that used to piss me off when I was 13, but you couldn't argue with it. All my friends were Cleveland Indians fans. Remember Herb Score?
They all came up through KC. In those days and earlier ones, my grandfather ran a restaurant in a farm club town that was popular with the budding yankees. He had mantle, maris, herzog, billy martin, I think Whitey Ford and a bunch I forgot as regulars.
His favorite teams later in life were the Royals and the Cards, but he died before the '85 world series. He would have been in seventh heaven and probably wouldn't have cared who won.

Depends on what she's belting - If I were she, I'd stay away from I Ain't Never Loved A Man(Aretha), Twisted (Carol Sloane, Annie Ross) or Ornithology (Ella! to name a few.
