Pepsi Catches Obama's Heat

I am an avid drinker of Pepsi One, the most delicious diet beverage available on planet Earth. A cold Pepsi One is as good as, if not better than, a "normal" Pepsi. It has 1 calorie, which must be where they put the delicious.

As such, I'm pretty clued in to Pepsi's packaging changes, and I recently noticed a change in the logo. Something about it seemed familiar, but I couldn't quite put my finger on it until I saw this commercial last night.

Now, I'm left to wonder if Team Obama originally modeled their logo after Pepsi's. After all, Pepsi has successfully marketed itself as the choice of my generation and up. If so, this new Pepsi logo completes the circle, like The Producers' journey from movie about a musical, to musical, then back to a movie musical.

Coca-Cola, meanwhile, couldn't be more McCain-esque with its red packaging and reliance on people's fear of change. It was their switch to New Coke that provided the best example of that fear that Madison Avenue has ever seen.

Now that Obama is in office, promising a new era of bi-partisanship, could a Dr. Pepper renaissance be in the offing?

Bonus: Here's a last from the past. Try watching it like a McCain campaign ad. Just fill in the parts about terrorists and celebrities.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.
