The NY Daily News has some excerpts of
Ann Coulter's upcoming book, "Guilty: Liberal 'Victims' and their Assault on America." According to reports, Coulter writes of Michelle Obama:
"Her obvious imitation of Jackie O's style - the flipped-under hair, the sleeveless A-line dresses, the short strands of fake pearls - would have been laughable if done by anyone other than a media-designated saint."
I think it's clear that the media
did fawn over the Obamas, and I also think it's quite obvious Michelle Obama did, in fact, take a page from Jackie O. ... Having said that, I think she looked lovely -- and if you're going to attempt to copy
someone's style -- is
Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis a bad place to start?
To be sure, there will be plenty of serious criticisms of the Obamas to come -- and I have no doubt Coulter makes some substantive arguments in her book -- but why release
this petty excerpt to the press? ... Of course, the answer is that a so-called "cat fight" will generate interest in cable news shows and blogs.
The Daily News goes on to write,
"In the book, Coulter repeatedly refers to the President-elect as "B. Hussein Obama" and complains that the media "literally wanted to have sex with him."
This, of course, is designed to arouse controversy. I've long wondered whether or not this
William F. Buckley meets
P.T. Barnum character is helpful -- or hurtful -- to the conservative movement, and I have concluded she is mostly harmful. This, of course, is a prime example of why that is the case. Interestingly, my friends who know her well tell me she is actually a delightful and fun human being -- which leads me to believe this is all schtick. Is she merely the "Bizarro World" version of
Michael Moore, who is more concerned with selling herself -- and her books -- than with selling a political philosophy?
Regardless, her antics have made her extremely famous, and I have no doubt she will sell many, many of these books...for what that's worth...
