Barack Obama hasn't even taken office yet, and he's already gotten so lazy that he's just ordering administrators off the TV. We're talking about CNN's televised doctor, Sanjay Gupta, whom Obama is prepared to tap for surgeon general...
President-elect Barack Obama has offered the job of surgeon general to Sanjay Gupta, the neurosurgeon and correspondent for CNN and CBS, according to two sources with knowledge of the situation.
Gupta has told administration officials that he wants the job, and the final vetting process is under way. He has asked for a few days to figure out the financial and logistical details of moving his family from Atlanta to Washington but is expected to accept the offer.
By picking a journalist from CNN, Obama further establishes himself as a centrist. One can only imagine the outcry from the right and left, respectively if he had picked MSNBC's resident nutritionist, Moby, or Fox News's dean of health, the Marlboro Man.
And a TV personality like Gupta also establishes Obama's credentials among the all-important couch potato demographic-- a group projected to keep growing, given recent unemployment figures.
Accordingly, expect the President-elect to continue to reach out to this group-- starting with appointing Judge Joe Brown to the Supreme Court and replacing milquetoast deputy budget director Clay Johnson with a ShamWow.
Gupta is an out-and-out quack. Most of Obama's picks have been good ones. This one is not.

And the celebrity bandwagon rolls along! We've become a bad Hollywood television show. Afterall, Hollywood, and the media, did create this illusion of a President with no experience and are responsible for putting him in the White House. I guess we'll all have to play along for now.

The only knuclehead here is the one who wrote this article. Dr. Sanjay Gupta is a fabulous choice for Surgeon General. Why does it matter that he has been a correspondent/adviser for CNN. Why don't you mention how many lives he has saved in Iraq by performing operations on critically wounded GIs???

You bitter little twit! Just because Dr. Gupta is young and good-looking and successful, you sound a bit jealous. Loser! Obama is doing absolutely the right thing in adding people to his administration with whom members of the public ... that's me ... and yes, even you ... can connect. Don't be such a hater. And maybe get yourselves REAL jobs, instead of spewing bitter, angry diatribes like this one ... which hopefully no educated and forward-thinking person has responded to favourably.

I think this is an excellent choice, after seeing bumbling idiots for previous surgeon generals. They were terrible with P.R. and therefore nobody cared about what they had to say.

Obama is not a centrist!!! He is just trying to create the illusion of being one....You will see....his agenda will be FAR LEFT and with a Democratic Congress and Senate, he will get 95% of his FAR LEFT AGENDA!!!!!

You should just file this in the circular file. That's all your comments are worth. He is a doctor, so what's the problem?

The more appointments Obama makes proves this in not an agent for change but simply a liberal democrat surrounding himself with like minds. Same old politics of liberal tax and spend and socialized medicine. Obama will fall on his sword soon and even the in the pocket, sold out liberal medial will niot be able to run interference for him. Glad I did not vote for him.

What a stupid article. Why do you have to make fun of our new President picking a professional surgeon and so what if he has a job on CNN? It is people like you that make ruining this country your hobby. You are an idiot and someone needs to teach you some respect.

Do not minimize the accomplishments of Dr. Sanjay Gupta! He trained as a neurosurgeon at the University of Michigan. As a CNN foreign correspondent in Iraq he was called upon five times to perform emergency brain surgery, and he was questioning America's health care policies as early as the late '80's. Dr. Gupta is an excellent neurosurgeon first...a CNN correspondent last. He will be a terrific Surgeon General!

Dr. Gupta is exactly that - a doctor. It would be nice to have a Surgeon General who is a not a total stranger to the general public nor a troglodyte like C. Everett Koop. The authors of this article are merely showing themselves to be twin assholes.

Very cool. The doctor has the credentials and the ear of the people. Maybe when he suggests to stop smoking, exercise and eat health, people will listen!

Thank goodness that President Obama has the foresight and ba**s to think - and act - outside the box! I am a faithful CNN watcher and respect Dr. Gupta for his knowledge, straight-forwardness and ability to connect to all of us. He knows what he's talking about and is more than qualified to be Surgeon General.
