Party Poopers: Dean, Pelosi, Reid, and Conyers Turn on Obama?

Can't you just feel the warm waves Democratic love emitting from the direction of Washington DC? No? I can't see why not. After all, Barack Obama-the man acting more presidential than the actual president-is set to be sworn in. Democrats control both houses of Congress. Time to uncork the champagne and get this party started, right?

Well, maybe not. From our national press corps (not to be confused with corpse) come a slew of new stories to inform you that--gasp!--the honeymoon may, repeat, may all ready over. Yes, while it is true that we only have one president at at time, that doesn't mean we can't have multiple dysfunctional relationships between party and figure head of said party, just ask W. But now that we have regime change in Washington, and since dysfunctional begins with a D, who better than the Dems to show us how it's really done? So, hold onto your seats, America, this roller coaster ride is about to begin.

Politico has been sounding the warning bells the loudest, as in today's lead story "O-bummer" which informs us that "His [Obama's] team is smart but not perfect, and Democrats are supportive but not supine." Among the shockers reported, is the stunning revelation that not every Senator agrees with every one of Obama's cabinet picks, and that a lot of Dems question the wisdom of tax cuts.

Heavens. Cover your children's ears lest they hear the sound of political debate. Or do you like it rough and tumble? More tempest for your teapot?

House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers, for one, isn't turned on by the words "Surgeon General Gupta."

Diane Feinstein wasn't crazy about Leon Panetta heading up the CIA, until Obama called her on the phone and made nice.

Former DNC chief Howard Dean and Obama seem to have their own feud going. Obama named Tim Kaine as the new guy while Dean was vacationing in Polynesia, which was read as a snub by Dean loyalists. Worse, Obama picked Dean's longtime rival, Rahm Emmanuel as his Chief of Staff, and gave the Heath and Human Services post to Tom Daschle instead of Dr. Dean (maybe he could get Surgeon General should Conyers sink Gupta).

Harry Reid, ever the contrarian, announced "I don't work for Obama," right before he caved to Obama on the seating of Roland Burris. There's always next time, I guess.

Nancy Pelosi wants a repeal of the Bush tax cuts, not new and improved ones. And some Senate Democrats don't think Obama's stimulus stimulates enough. They want us to spend even more. Both are legitimate points.

So, there you have it. You might be feeling shattered right about now if you were somehow under the illusion that everyone was going to agree about everything now that Hope and Change were in the air. The rest of us were never looking for perfection, or unanimity in our government. We were just tired of incompetence, and on that score, we'll still have a whole lot to celebrate on January 20th.
