New Yorkers Going Sour on Sweet Caroline?

A new poll out today shows that Caroline Kennedy's push to fill Hillary Clinton's soon to be vacant New York Senate seat continues to stagnate. The Quinnipiac University poll shows Kennedy trailing New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo 31 percent to 24 percent. 48 percent of New Yorkers say that Kennedy is not qualified to be Senator compared to 37 percent that say she is qualified.

The only person whose opinion matters in this process is accidental New York Governor David Paterson, who claims that the polls will not play into his decision. Paterson pledged to appoint Clinton's successor after she is confirmed as Secretary of State, which will likely happen next week.

538 blogger Nate Silver asks, "If [Paterson] were going to name Caroline Kennedy to the Senate, wouldn't it have happened already?" He also compared Kennedy to one of the Bush administration's more disastrous nominations. "People have made the comparison to Sarah Palin, but this feels more Harriet Miers-ish," Silver writes, "as in the longer someone is left out there hanging, the more manifest the problems with their credentials, and the less likely they'll get appointed because of inertia alone."

Elsewhere, Michelle Malkin was much more concise, "Message from voters," she wrote, "No, Miss Thang, you are not entitled."

Eli at FireDogLake picks apart Kennedy's poorly chosen sports metaphor.

And finally, if the Senate seat doesn't work out for Kennedy, there's always the comics.
