Many of our commenters have noted that much of the media coverage of the inauguration has reflected the feelings of the
64% of the country who feel better about the future of the United States with Obama as president. This, of course, doesn't do justice to the 19% who feel worse (17% feel neither better nor worse or are not sure how they feel).
So for those of you who are just determined to be unhappy in the midst of a mostly joyful country, I have two things to say. First of all, if you think there has been no coverage of the opposition voices,
you're wrong. Secondly, I hear you.
So here are the 7 most negative comments I could find about Barack Obama's Inauguration.
1. Rush Limbaugh - "I Don't Want Him To Succeed"I don't think Rush actually means he wants America to fail with Obama in charge, I think he's just saying that he doesn't want Obama's stated policies to turn into a reality.
"They didn't give Bush a chance in 2000. Before he was inaugurated the search-and-destroy mission had begun. I'm not talking about search-and-destroy, but I've been listening to Barack Obama for a year and a half. I know what his politics are. I know what his plans are, as he's stated them. I don't want them to succeed."
2. Power Line - "Ally of Hamas Speaks at Obama's Inauguration Prayer Service"I guess this is an attempt to continue the narrative that President Obama pals around with terrorists? I don't know, but apparently Ingrid Mattson is a president of a group that may one day be proven to have some connection to Hamas.
"Ingrid Mattson, president of the Islamic Society of America was reportedly among the honored speakers at a Barack Obama's inauguration prayer service at the National Cathedral here in Washington. Last July, federal prosecutors in Dallas filed court documents linking the Islamic Society of America to Hamas, which the U.S. considers a terrorist organization."
3. Leon H. Wolf at Red State - " I hope that Barack Obama is a failure as a President."Ok, unlike Rush, Wolf DOES want to see the country go south (yikes!). He's afraid that if we all are comfy with our beautiful houses and large automobiles, we'll forget that Obama is a morally bankrupt individual (assuming you buy the argument that he is).
"You see, what happens when the trains run on time is that people are quicker to forget the moral failures of their elected officials, and their government at large. As we saw in the late 90s, when people are by and large materially prosperous (especially if they are artificially so), they dislike being bothered by those who would point out that their government is populated by the corrupt, the immoral, or the liars."
4. Hillary Kitten at Free Republic - "...a national disaster."Admittedly, I'm pretty sure I could have found something a little more bitter over at Free Republic had I looked hard enough, but I thought this joke was kind of nasty in a fun way.
Q. Why did George Bush declare a state of emergency for Barack Obama's inauguration?
A. Because everyone knows it's a national disaster.
5. ocsurf at The Motley Fool - "Barack Obama is not black" I've seen this sentiment quite a bit today. I chose to link to this particular post because a) it is at the Motley Fool (huh?) and b) the second paragraph in the two paragraph post assumes that no one read the first paragraph. Which I find very funny.
For those of you who read the title of this article and skipped to the end (right here), I'll repeat the gist of the message: Barack Obama isn't black. His mother is white and his father is black. The election is a victory for people who aren't completely white, but it's not a victory for people who are completely black.
6. Philip J. Berg - blah blah blah usurper hoax blah blah blahHow could I make a list and not include the latest from the birthers. I was particularly interested to learn of Berg's love of inappropriate quotation marks. I had not caught that before.
"It is a Sad Day for America as Obama is 'not qualified' to be President pursuant to 'our' United States Constitution. Today, unfortunately, a 'Usurper,' Obama, takes the oath of office as President and every law he signs and appointment he makes will be void. It is regretful that Obama has permitted this to happen as he knows he is 'not natural born' and this is the greatest 'Hoax' ever placed upon the citizens of the United States of America in 230 years."
7. Michelle Malkin - "the benediction's eloquence was marred by glib racialism"
There are many strong feelings out there that Obama on the one hand promised to lead our nation into a post-racial society, while on the other he played, and continues to play, the race card. This quote from Malkin sums up a lot of those feelings.
"Lowery got big cheers when he weaved in a weird prayer rap expressing his hope for a future in which... the "white would embrace the right."... Who wrote that line? Jeremiah Wright? And what would Obama's grandparents and mother have to say?"
I know that this is by no means a complete list, but I hope it is a representative one. If you feel that I have missed some important points, please feel free to share them in the comments.
