Obama Tally: Day 3 - Obama Breaks Even

Day 3 for President Obama was a bit of a mixed bag. Just after he signs the order to close Gitmo, a story surfaces at the New York Times that a former detainee is now an Al Qaeda leader. This helped bolster the argument for those who think we should maintain the prison and throw away the key.

Later in the day, he quietly reversed the "Mexico City Policy," which banned the use of taxpayer money from going to international family planning groups that offered abortion consultation or services. This is a significant step both symbolically and practically for his administration's view on abortion rights.

He ended the day by outlining a three step recovery plan. The finance guys who sit next to me encouraged me to list this as a win, but I'm inclined to see it as a wash as it seems that he has yet to win over some significant voices in congress.

Check out the running tally here.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.
