Day 3 for President Obama was a bit of a mixed bag. Just after he signs the order to close Gitmo, a story surfaces at the New York Times that a former detainee is now an Al Qaeda leader. This helped bolster the argument for those who think we should maintain the prison and throw away the key.Later in the day, he quietly reversed the "Mexico City Policy," which banned the use of taxpayer money from going to international family planning groups that offered abortion consultation or services. This is a significant step both symbolically and practically for his administration's view on abortion rights.
He ended the day by outlining a three step recovery plan. The finance guys who sit next to me encouraged me to list this as a win, but I'm inclined to see it as a wash as it seems that he has yet to win over some significant voices in congress.
Check out the running tally here.
