As you may have heard, President Obama made a pre-inaugural pledge not to smoke in the White House, one I'm sure he intends to keep. He never said anything about sneaking off to Joe Biden's office in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building for a quick nic fix. So, what do we make of this? (via email) The following statement is from White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs:According to news accounts, firefighters extinguished a fire in a fireplace. That sounds like the kind of hastily made up lie that a 3rd grader might tell, right up there with, "I didn't hit him, he hit himself!"
Early this afternoon, the D.C. Fire Department was called to the Executive Office Building in response to reports of smoke on the 4th floor. A limited number of staff were temporarily evacuated and have now returned to their offices. There were no injuries and no apparent damage to the building.
