Politico reports that,
"House Republican Leader John A. Boehner and his No. 2, Whip Eric Cantor, told their rank-and-file members Tuesday morning during a closed-door meeting to oppose the bill when it comes to the floor Wednesday, according to an aide familiar with the discussion."
As one fiscal conservative told me, there is a big difference between "urging" members to vote no and "whipping" them to vote no. From the sounds the above quote, Boehner is essentially giving Republicans
permission to vote their conscience.
Still, opposing this ridiculous spending bill is the right thing for Republicans to do, both from a policy standpoint -- and from a long-term political standpoint.
If enough Republicans vote YES, then this will be perceived as "bipartisan". That means once the stimulus fails, both parties will be blamed. The GOP can't let that happen if they want to return to their mantle of limited government.
It will be very interesting to see how Republican Members vote on this...
