In support of President Obama's stimulus package, the union coalition AFSCME (American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees) funded an ad targeting Republicans for their opposition. Named in the spot is the House whip, Virginia's Eric Cantor. Here's the video, which rather tamely encourages voters to call GOP leaders and urge them to get behind the president's plan:
In a misguided and politically tone deaf move, Cantor's office responded by emailing out its own ad. They dug up an old 1970s PSA with a voiceover portraying AFSCME members as cartoonishly profane meatheads. The ad is littered with curse words: "We don't take sh*t from nobody. You got that, @$*hole? AFSCME -- the f*&%ing union that works for you." Check it out (NSFW):
Not surprisingly, Cantor and his aides are now taking some heat for appearing to mock union members during a serious debate over the correct response to the nation's economic crisis. "During these tough economic times the last thing hard working Americans need is to be ridiculed by a member of the Republican leadership," said AFL-CIO President John Sweeney in a statement. "Rep. Cantor should apologize for insulting America's workers with this profane video."
And Cantor's office did finally apologize today. Press secretary Brad Dayspring released the following statement:
"I would like to apologize for a joke that was in no way an official response from Congressman Cantor, but instead an inappropriate email. I apologize to AFSCME for my inappropriate email containing an old video. Let me be clear, we know people are hurting in these trying times and House Republicans completely agree that we must pass an economic recovery bill that preserves, protects and create jobs for Americans facing these economic challenges."
Demonizing the Republicans. Next we'll have to wear armbands. And the Democrats will be saying,
They came for the Republicans but I did nothing because I was not a Republican.
They came for the Independents but I did nothing because I was not an Independent.
They came for the non-political but I did nothing because I was not a non-political.
Now they are coming for me and rightly so.

WTF! They can dish it out, but cry foul when it comes back to them? This has nothing to do with a serious debate, A debate is two-sided, the Democrats have bypassed all the ways and means of getting this bill on the floor and passed.
Obama and his minions are still using ACORN tactics; Get in their faces! Harrass them! Vilify them!

I find it interesting that Cantor and the rest of the republicans rubber-stamped everything Bush proposed which, ultimately, has gotten us to the mess we're in. Thankfully, their numbers are diminishing with each election cycle. Americans are on to them. Trickle down does not work for middle America. Maybe they have short memories, but we don't.

Such is the mentality of the republicans. And they say we have no respect for anyone. Seems to me they have no respect for union workers. This is not a big joke people. We have some serious problems, and we need to work together or we will not survive. This nation is big enough for all of us.

The attack ad against Cantor was put out by Americans United for Change, whose president, Brad Woodhouse, happens to be an associate of robert Gibbs and other Obama staffers. Obama hired Woodhouse to work in the DNC comminications dept. during the presidential elections.
Conclusion: This attack ad is actually an Obama ad cloaked as an outside job.

If not an official response, what was it? Republicans have no sense of humor, without castigating some individual or group.

Pity the poor Republicans! "Next we'll have to wear armbands." Yep, and then we will round you up and send you off to a concentration camp! Hey, how about Gitmo? You ought to enjoy it there inasmuch as your fat-ass, dope-fiend, college flunk-out Leader Limbaugh likes to call it a country club. Have fun, you paranoid idiots!

Let me understand the people defending this trash. A republican sends this e-mail around trashing middle americans, they get caught and now it's the liberal and Obama's fault. And you wonder why the republicans were voted out.

It was a 1970 era PSA? In 2009, I would call that some real reaching. Republicans are getting only what they deserve.

Hey, if the guys didn't use these profanities, no one could have played them back. AND, this comes from a 1970's PSA. Had to be a lot more shocking when it hit the air waves way back then.

The last 8 years Bush was the president, the head of state. The last time I studied how our government was set up, it had three branches that governed together. Now, for Obama to say that the last 8 years caused the economic problems is laughable. That is quite a slippery slope he is on. He was part of the last 8 years, so he was part of who created this problem, not just Bush. Remember Barney Frank? Dodd, and Cox? Remember greedy people like Madoff? Obama has went back on quite a few campaign promises. He wooed the more conservatives to do what? Stick socialism in our face. Yeah, I am impressed. Well America, we got him now. The only thing I can say is that if this stimulus package blows up in Obama's face, the republicans had nothing to do with it. I am hoping Mr. President, you don't fail.

I sense a double bus accident coming.
Cantor will throw Dayspring under the bus, and then AIPAC will throw Cantor under the bus.
Sad end to a sad political career
Cantor may be singing the wrong song.
He's got very trackable baggage, with skin in the game of Wall Street deceit.
His biggest backers may have to throw him under the bus.
This is a particularly bad time to riling the working class
