In an interview with FOX News's Greta Van Susteren, Bristol Palin, the 18-year-old daughter of Alaska Governor Sarah Palin discussed her unplanned pregnancy, and the out-of-wedlock birth her son Tripp. She seems like a very loving parent and nice young woman who genuinely wants other teens to learn from her mistakes. In specific she says she has no philosophical or religious issue with teens using contraception, and realizes that abstinence isn't a "realistic" course of action for most people. Watch:
Some may be surprised to hear Bristol's views on abstinence, but she's right on target. Studies have shown that abstinence education (like the kind that her mother has advocated) are a colossal waste of money. Teens who make pledges to abstain from sex until after marriage are every bit as likely to have sex out of wedlock as those who do not, and are less likely to use birth control. We should educate our teens about sex, and make sure they understand how to use birth control. Otherwise, they, like Bristol, may find themselves postponing their own dreams to take care of children whom they love, but whose arrival came far too quickly.

The writer of this story obviously is biased. i'd like to see the statistics he refers to. If he is a true journalist, he'd be wise to back up his "facts". It seems anybody can pen a story to lead the readers anyway he chooses, I suggest showing the facts not just opinions.

Yes, I hope everyone learns that abstinence only education does not work. She seems to be a mature, realistic young woman.

Watch the video. The words "philosophical or religious" are Greta's not Bristol's. It's clear that she believes abstinence is the ideal but because teens having sex is "more accepted" today, it is not realistic for all. This is a long way from saying that abstinence education is a waste of money. Just because most cannot live up to the standard does not mean that we lower the standard.

Look at the way those two are with TRIG - that is their child and not Sarah Palin's and I don't care what any of you believe - that is why Bristol was pulled out of school for all those months "with mono" prior to Trig's birth. The look Bristol is giving Trig is the look of a mothers love for her child not of a sister for her brother. Any parent out there knows that look, because they have the same one when looking at their own children.

I am sorry Bristol's pregnancy got entangled in the fact her mother was running for vice-president. I wish her only the best.
As for her mother, Sarah, I pray to God that this uneducated, ignoramus never occupies any higher office in this country than Governor of Alaska.

Leave this girl alone and allow her to become the best mother that she can. American's have far more problems to worry about than the out-of-wed-lock Palin baby. This happens every day to Thousands of teenage girls across America and until someone can come up with a plan to combate teen pregnacy and STD's that is prevalent in the United States.

As a sex educator I know that these statements are true. There is plenty of research on it out there. Don't believe it, do some research. WASTE OF MONEY and HARMFUL TO ADOLESCENTS and into their adult lives

ABSTINENCE ONLY WORKS WHEN FOLKS ABSTAIN - DUH ! WHEN HORMONES COMPETE WITH ABSTINENCE AGREEMENTS - - - HORMONES WIN. WITH 6.7 BILLION PEOPLE POLLUTING POLLUTING US TO EXTINCTION - SOMETHING MUST BE DONE TO STEM THE TIDE OF BIRTHS. ABSTINENCE, BIRTH CONTROL AND ABORTION ALL NEED TO BE PROMOTED VIGOROUSLY ! ESPECIALLY WHEN IT'S CLEAR - - -THERE IS NO GOD TO GUIDE US !

Ben, I have never heard anyone for contraceptive education say they did not abstinence taught as well. On the other hand, I hear all of the time that contraception should not be taught at all. It simply does not make sense. Haven't we learned by now that when one runs off with half the information necessary to make a good decision they are destined to fail?

Bristol is the poster child of everything wrong with education today. Abstinence only education has resulted in rapidly rising rates of pregnancy and STDs among teens as young as 13. Maybe the not so religious right will notice the hypocrisy of a teen mother whose own mother is against sex ed. Probably not.

Yes, it is apparent that most kids think it is more and more accepted that they are having sex. Let's get the the REAL reason why. Even when parents try to teach abstinance in the home, the kids are so exposed to the media and tv programming. This hollywood (liberal) media is being shoved down their throats with the current teen programs mostly to make money off of people like Britney Spears. They make it seem like of course you should be having sex as a teen. Then the same society that promotes this is now trying to collect millions of $$$ of our tax money to give these same teen abortions that they now have to have--because no one practices abstinance any more. Some parents are to blame because they now take the responsibility off themselves and say "boys will be boys" and don't teach them to respect girls, or they let their girls do things they would never do as teens themselves. Good luck to the parents of the teens in the next ten years. I'm glad mine are still abstinant and proud of it. Still glad you voted democrat?

Couldn't disagree more with Bristol Palin's assessment that abstinence isn't realistic for teens. While I was a teen, after seeing a few teens with babies, I decided that education and a career would later make me a better wife and mother. So, when dating, I said "no." A lot. I didn't even have sex until I had my first college degree and a great job. Now, I have a gorgeous, loving, extremely successful husband, 4 amazing children, a very nice house (plus 2 weekend homes), we travel the world, and I have a Porsche parked in my garage. By comparison, the girls that I knew in high school--who didn't say "no" to sex--have long since parted with the fathers of their children and have been struggling financially for decades. Sorry, Bristol. But if Levi really is the right guy for you at age 17/18, then he'd still be the right guy who waited until you graduated from college and would have respected your decision to wait to have sex. That's what love is. And, that's the message that I tell my kids. (Incidentally, my eldest daughter is the same age as Bristol and instead of getting pregnant, my daughter spent her high school years taking AP classes...which won her an academic scholarship to a college that consistently ranks among the best in the nation.)

Mr. Knowles thanks for correcting me, I have read the info. I apologize for the accusation, you have provided statistics for the basis of your opinion. I disagree about that teaching abstinence as a colossal waste of time. I agree that kids need education in areas of sex, but not acceptance/approval based on "everybodys doing it". I think we must still continue to teach what is right as well as deal with the reality of what our society has become. Not to cloud the issue but what do we do about drug and alcohol use? Provide rolling papers? How far can we take this? I think we agree that something needs to be done.

Natoli's, I agree that hollywood sets a bad example for children but I don't think they have ever been role models...Charlie Chaplin's life was a disaster. I also agree that parental guidance is lacking in some cases. But, I have to say that one can only do so much in an attempt to control others behavior. So, since sex is a part of human nature, it is wise to send educated young adults into life instead of sending them out into the world with only half the information. Your children are fortunate you instilled strong values...others may not be so lucky.
