Some guys just can't get a break.

Newly minted Illinois Senator Roland Burris, has seen his status go from "embattled" to "doomed" in just a few days. He didn't have a good start in the first place, what with being appointed by disgraced Governor Rod Blagojevich and all. But it's gotten much, much worse since he was sworn in to office in January.

First came the revelations that Burris had possibly perjured himself by not reporting repeated phone contacts with Blagojevich's brother wherein he was asked to start fundraising for the Governor in order to be considered for the Senate seat.

Now it turns out that Burris actually went along with it ...

A few months before Senator Roland W. Burris was appointed by former Gov. Rod R. Blagojevich to the United States senate, Mr. Burris tried, without success, to raise money from his friends for the governor at the behest of the governor's brother, Mr. Burris has acknowledged for the first time.

Mr. Burris, who became Illinois's junior senator a month ago over objections that the beleaguered governor should no longer make the pick, told reporters on Monday night that he had talked to Mr. Blagojevich's brother, Robert, sometime in November about his troubles raising funds, and only later told the brother that he should not raise funds because it might appear he was trying to curry favor to win the senate seat.

This is especially pathetic. Not only did Burris go along with the pay-to-play scheme, he wasn't actually able to raise any money. That's like Eliot Spitzer rendezvousing with his prostitute and then having "performance problems!"

Needless to say, the calls for resignation have started.
