God bless Michael Steele. Or should I say "Inclusive Deity-style higher power bless Michael Steele. The Republican National Committee Chair is firing nails into the GOP's coffin with a nail gun, which means before long, he'll need a permit for that thing.
He was asked about civil unions today, a right favored by 63% of Americans, and he took a hard line against it. From Politico:
Why the overreach? The GOP has a modicum of cover to oppose gay marriage, since, you know, President Obama does. Maybe Steele feels like his party needs an applause line right about now.

This is just the direction Steele needs to take the GOP if they are to successfully lose worse in 2010 than they did in '06 or '08.In response to a question from radio host Mike Gallagher today, RNC chairman Michael Steele took a hard, dismissive line against civil unions -- which have increasingly become a fallback, compromise position for blue-state Republicans and others who oppose same-sex marriage.
"Do you favor civil unions?" Gallagher asked:
STEELE: No, no no. What would we do that for? What are you crazy? No. Why would we backslide on a core, founding value of this country. I mean this isn't something that you just kind of like, "oh well, today I feel, you know, loosey-goosey on marriage." I mean, this is a foundational principle of this country. It is a foundational principle of organized society. It isn't something that, you know, in America we decided, "let's make it between a man and a woman, oh well now, let's change our mind and make it between anyone and anyone. No.

If 63% of the nation are for civil unions, why did every single state in the union vote against it? Marriage is a sacrament, between one man and one woman, with the family as the core of the country. There are already laws in place so that anyone can leave their estate to their lover. I guess you didn't know that. Typical.

They voted against 'same-sex MARRIAGE' or rather they defined MARRIAGE as between a man and woman. The holy rollers want a monopoly on the word 'marriage'. Civil Unions are different, and there is much more to it than just "leaving their estate to their lover." But that's okay Jennifer, even that ass Steele didn't understand the difference.
Obama can totally screw up now and he's STILL a shoo-in for 2012.

It sounds like Steele answered the same way Jennifer did, confusing civil unions with marriage. If you read Steele's answer he specifically mentions marriage. I'm not sure how he feels about civil unions. Perhaps he is against them, but his answer seems more like he was talking about gay marriage. It will be interesting to see if he corrects himself or not.

Jennifer, some people do believe that marriage is sacred and that it should be between a man and a woman. They have the right to believe that. However, we live in a multi cultural pluaralistic country. The government has a responsibility to treat all of it's citizens equally. In as much, it has no right to proscribe the types of arrangements two individuals choose to enter into. If you want a sanctified marriage get it done in the church. The state is to provide civil ceremonies to both homosexual and heterosexual couples. And you need to remember that gay people have also have families that must be protected by the institution of marriage.

screw you people that keep insisting that gays should be able to "marry". Marriage is between a man and a woman, just like the bible says, read it and stop trying to change it to fit your perverted view of this issue. Nobody is denying your right of a civil union, stop thinking that you are "married", because YOU ARE NOT.

Well, there's another possible approach for those who don't want to recognize gay relationships. Take away all the benefits -- tax, inheritance, social security, VA, immunity against testifying against your spouse, community property, family discounts, etc. -- that comes to heterosexual people just for getting married. Then there would be no differential in how the government treats gay and straight couples; everyone would be treated as single individuals.
Couples could choose to ritualize their relationships in their churches (or not). (After all, a number of churches do perform gay marriages.) But the state would be as oblivious to those ceremonies as it is to a baptism or confirmation or bar mitzvah.
