White House Unaware of RNC War on Civil Unions

At today's White House press briefing, the subjects were the economy, the economy, Iraq, and the economy. In between all of that, I got to ask my first question as a White House reporter.

I asked Robert Gibbs if the President has any actions planned in support of civil unions, given RNC chairman Michael Steele's attack Tuesday on extending the right to same-sex couples.

Gibbs responded that he hadn't heard the remarks, so was unable to respond. I read the quote to him, and later asked if he could get a reaction from the President.

I'm not sure what to make of this. Either Steele, civil unions, or both seem not to be on the administration's radar. With the November passage of several anti-gay laws, I hope someone is keeping an eye on this.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.
