Judd Gregg Pretends That Whole Cabinet Thing Never Happened

Let's face it friends. We've all done things we'd sooner forget than acknowledge. Some of us might have shot off our mouths when we were on the sauce. Others might have a few run-ins with ol' Johnny Law. Still others have accepted cabinet positions we didn't want and then sheepishly backed away.

For those of you in that last category, we suggest you follow the example of Sen. Judd Gregg (R-NH), who boldly brushed aside his sordid past yesterday by stabbing his would-be-future-boss in the proverbial groin...

New Hampshire Sen. Judd Gregg-- the ranking Republican on the Senate Budget Committee who initially accepted being President Obama's Commerce Secretary before withdrawing-- called the administration's budget outline "a half-hearted attempt" to reduce the deficits and "missed opportunity" to take the country in a fiscally sound direction...

Gregg also challenged Obama's stated desire to reign in government spending, asking in his statement "Where is the spending restraint? Instead, government spending continues to grow and expand."

You know, it's funny. That article we just quoted mentioned that Sen. Gregg was Obama's nominee for Commerce Secretary, but neither one of us could remember anything about that. Surely that was a typo. Gregg was so forceful about Obama's "half-hearted attempt" that clearly there was no way such a thing ever happened. And yet, the more we think about it... naaww.

Not to be outdone in the "burying past transgressions" category, Gregg's fellow would-be Commerce Secretary Bill Richardson not only announced he disliked Obama's budget, but he also informed the Kansas City Athletics that he'd be entering the Hall of Fame as a Yankee.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.
