We here at The Political Machine have been reporting for months, in some depth, about filmmaker John Ziegler and his new project, "Media Malpractice: How Obama Got Elected and Sarah Palin Was Targeted." While covering CPAC this past weekend, I caught a screening of the film (which cites fellow Political Machiner Denise Williams and me), and got to know Ziegler a little better through a series of interviews and "palling around," as it were.
Blumenthal has posted an edited version at The Daily Beast (the full clip is forthcoming), and both men have agreed to debate the points of dispute between them. I'll keep you updated as to when that will happen. Here's Max's video, followed by my review of "Media Malpractice." You can see both of them explaining the altercation here.
Update: I recovered the video from my UStream interview with John at CPAC.
Get the new PD toolbar! Media Malpractice, I can say without qualification, is an entertaining film. It is a crowd-pleaser to the millions on the right who voted for Senator McCain, and a comedy for those on the left who have a sense of humor. Either way, it is a funny film. If Ziegler errs, it is by omission or conflation, but his film is well-documented and openly credits all of its sources.
Ziegler's movie starts out with a laugh line, albeit unintentional. Onscreen text informs us that Barack Obama defeated Alan Keyes in 2004 because Keyes was underfunded and carpetbagging. I think Keyes might want to have that framed and hung in his office, as it is about the kindest assessment I've ever heard of that race.
Ziegler narrates the film in his trademark hyperkinetic style, and he weaves a humorously skewed narrative that posits Oprah Winfrey as Obama's puppetmaster, and Saturday Night Live as a major lever in Obama's early success. I don't want to pick the film apart, but it is with leaps like these that the film advances its thesis.
The film also makes the most of gaffe-ish moments like State Senator Kirk Watson's goose-egg when asked about Obama's legislative accomplishments. Ziegler employs comical music and pacing to maximize the impact of clips like these.
It is a testament to John Ziegler's skill at pulling these clips together, along with his narration, that the film is so entertaining. It really moves along.
The latter part of the film relies heavily on the exclusive Sarah Palin interview that Ziegler scored. (The full interview is available on the DVD.) I found these clips to be revelatory, showing a human side to Sarah Palin that many might have missed on the campaign trail. Her charm and folksiness really shine through in these sessions.
Unfortunately, Palin has a much harder time keeping her facts straight than Ziegler does. She tries to make it look like Obama called the dogs off of his own family, but sicced them on hers. The truth is, Barack Obama specifically and vociferously said Palin's family was off limits. It is this kind of omission/conflation that robs Palin's scenes of credibility.
I have to admit, too, I was surprised that a sharp operator like Ziegler would buy some of Palin's excuses, like the claim that Katie Couric's "newspapers" question was somehow inherently insulting to Alaskans.
He does subject her to some pretty harsh treatment, having her watch video of media reports that were pretty unkind, then having her react. It got a little uncomfortable to watch, but also elicited some of the best, most moving reactions.
The audience at the CPAC screening responded overwhelmingly to the film, laughing in all the right places. The film, and the audience, were lacking the nasty tone that a liberal might expect to see, that I expected to see. It really was a feel-good film.
I talked to John after the film, and I had a hard time convincing him I actually liked it, but like it, I did. I think this is a film that can be enjojyed on several levels, by different groups of people. I highly recommend it to conservatives and PUMAs, who will doubtless roar with approval. PUMA co-founder Will Bower told me he loved it.
I would also encourage liberals to check it out, and not just to laugh dismissively at it. Watching this film with a conservative audience gave me a new sense of perspective on the right's sense of injury, right or wrong.
A pensive and reasonable commentary, or is this the awakening?

Will someone please tell me why I am supposed to care about the right's "sense of injury"? I mean really, they had to make up the birther crap etc. and talk about how President Obama is a liberal/socialist/fascist (as if they are synonyms) and make predictions about all of the horrible things that he will do. Well boy-howdy kiddies, all the left had to do for the last 8 years was point out the actual facts about what Cheney/Bush were doing. No fantasy was needed! The right is so put out at LOSING that they have lost what grip on reality they may ever have had . . .

PUMA is an acronym for Party Unity My Ass which developed during the lenghty Hillary/Obama primary debate. One could say they are the centrist/right part of the Democrat party.
......opps did I say Democrat Party. I hope Chris Matthews don't freak out.

If an original Hawaii-doctor-generated and Hawaii-hospital-released Obama birth certificate exists, why wouldn't Obama simply order the document released and end the controversy?
Smith cites Hawaii officials who have 'testified' that there do exist records – though unreleased to the public or the courts – verifying Obama's American birth.
None of the so-called 'evidence' of Obama's constitutional eligibility produced thus far is beyond reasonable doubt nor as iron-clad as simply producing an authentic birth certificate, something everyday Americans are required to do regularly, but the president still refuses to do.
Instead, a series of law firms have been hired on Obama's behalf around the nation to prevent any public access to his birth certificate, passport records, college records and other documents.
Where's the proof Barack Obama was born in the U.S. or that he fulfills the "natural-born American" clause in the Constitution? If you still want to see it, join more than 300,000 others and sign up now. http://www.wnd.com/index.php?fa=PAGE.view&pageId=81550

Tommy, A very well written review. I do differ with you on a few points.
First, what Barack Obama said publicly about family being off limits may not have been what he was communicating privately to his henchmen. Whining about Michelle Obama's fall from grace after making the "first time in my adult life I've been truly proud of my country" remark was I think a bit inappropriate. If you're going to have your wife actually speaking out on the campaign trail, then don't get mad when she pays the price for a gaffe.
Secondly, the newspaper question was not a question that Obama or Biden would have been asked. Couric was playing a gotcha game and Palin new it. If Palin had answered, Couric's follow-up would have been something like this: "Ok, Ms. I read the New York Times, what was the lead story on page 4 C last Tuesday? Furthermore, how much does Mrs. Crabtree want for that sewing maching she has listed in the classified section?" Again, it was a gotcha question. Like Gibson's Bush Doctrine question, there was no correct answer. Charles Krauthammer, the man who coined the term Bush Doctrine, said Gibson got it wrong too. How many voters knew that before they voted?
I also don't think it is completely unreasonable to assume Palin may have been offended by the question because she interpreted it to mean "do you hicks in Alaska get the big city papers or care about anything that happens outside of Alaska?"
Finally, the right's sense of injury is not relevant. McCain in all liklihood would not have won. The fact that the press didn't deliver the victory to Obama is not the point. The point is the MSM should not have been trying to deliver the victory to anyone. Even more unacceptable for anyone who values a fair and unbiased press is the way the MSM dropped all pretence of objectivity during this election.
I put together a political cartoon which puts the Palin gaffe factor into perspective, but most people aren't familiar enough with all of the gaffes during and after the campaign to get the joke.
I'd love to know what you think Tommy. Follow the link below and scroll to the bottom of the page. http://www.hootervillegazette.com If you click on the cartoon, there is a nice blog that goes along with it.
Thanks again for a rather thoughtful review.
Sincerely, Dash RIPROCK III

Yeah sure T.C. "Barack Obama specifically and vociferously said Palin's family was off limits", but what did he say when the camera's were off? For those who don't, or won't recognize the proponderance of slander that Sarah Palin dealt with during the campaign, and who still, for some reason unknown deals with it (could it be simply that her opposition are a bunch of pussies...uuuh yep!) And T.C., maybe try harder next time to pass along a compliment to another instead of that halfass, can't-believe-you-actually-enjoyed-this-guys-movie one you tried to pawn off on us....think of "The Little Engine That Could", and just own it baby? Preesh.

Unless they have a similarly developed duty of care, their sense of injury is going to be hard to sell.

hey i do believe you are actually FURTHER evolving [i know you & caleb even became friends in the course of the coverage, see what can happen when you party outside of your own circles lols. congrats on the new gig. hey to ~d saw her on pupgate ;-) alas the acrimonious partisanship & posturing finally drove me to declare independence. haven't given up hope for a new viable 3rd party!]
To be sure there will always be legit disagreements between the two major parties --but when the arguments become "collective group think and faceless labeling" on the part of both sides, ultimately it becomes ALL AMERICANS who wind up holding the short straw. And my country 'tis of thee becomes my party right or wrong with no room for general discourse nor progressive debate.
We've all seen the results when concerns go ignored, questions aren't raised, and wrongs go unchallenged.
We've also witnessed what lack of tolerance and empathy for those unlike ourselves can lead to ...
To at least be willing to see someone else's point of view from THEIR perspective [whether or not you agree] is the first step towards seeing others as potential allies rather than evil enemies.
During the Depression America survived and became stronger because everyone put aside differences and worked together. We came through WWI/II by joining forces as a whole. And after 9/11 America moved forward again as one nation. We already know there is not anything Americans can't accomplish TOGETHER.
We just ALL have to be willing to take the chance and that first step --towards better understanding and being able to find common ground for the sake of America ...as well as our own.

Dash, funny cartoon, but the answer is "They did, and nobody cared."
As for Barack Obama's declaration that Palin's family was off limits, you and Lola make a presumption of bad faith based on nothing at all.

Tommy,
Actually it's based on the fact that it kept happening and Obama did not express further outrage.
In truth, I'm not sure if he could have stopped it; but after making one token statement, he didn't seem to mind very much that it continued to happen.
If you're answering the question that I think you are, my response is that it didn't get the coverage it should have received. In fact, Ziegler's film proves voters new everything negative about Palin and had not heard of the Biden and Obama gaffes.
Glad you liked the cartoon. I've stopped showing it around because if one isn't aware of the gaffes, it's not funny.

Ziegler has balls the size of grapefruit to stand down all the big libs of the big networks. The points he makes are valid and statistically based. The thing is, most libs are all about emotion and not about facts, so they tend to just laugh it off from some sense of 'higher evolution' or something. Attacking the messenger (ad hominem attacks) are a key part of democratic socialism as it always is with despots looking for power. You destroy the person when you can not defend yourself against there position.

The left has been able to take it's cheap shots for 8 years, now it's their turn to get the cheap shots. Remember, Obama does something everyday, just like Bush did, that we can make fun or rue the idocracy(great movie btw - it's where we are headed!) of, just remember this: It's easier to follow than lead, so now that you are leading be ready to take the lumps that go with it. You'll soon find you cannot make everyone happy and will always disappoint many around you. Good luck in your tenure lefties. :)
