Toomey Hints He May 'Primary' Arlen Specter

Breaking ranks to vote for the Stimulus package was just WAY to much of a break from ranks. We will see in the Primary whether the folks in PA want a "traditional" Republican or Specter.

Well, as you mentioned in your Politico piece, Toomey ran aginst Specter in a GOP primary in 2004 and lost. True, there is no George Bush to endorse Specter this election. However, Pennsylvania in the last few election cycles has trended towards the Democrats (Obama carried the state by 11 points this election). Of course, things can change by 2010, but my guess is Toomey - like Rick Santorum, who lost his Senate seat - is too far to the right for most Pennsylvanians. Even if Toomey pulls off the primary, he will have to face a Democrat in the general election --- and there will be plenty of them waiting to take him on, as he does not have the name recognition of Specter.
