First, he was doing too much, now he's loafing.

I reported earlier that the Duke basketball coach had slammed Obama for making NCAA Tournament picks, pointedly mentioning that his team was not in Obama's Final Four. Now, Senator John Kyl is trying to frame the President's appearance on Jay Leno's show as another fatal distraction:

Hot Air's Allahpundit is half right about the strategy:
Stupid on the merits but good retail politics in how it syncs with the story of Duke's coach goofing on The One for wasting time on NCAA picks instead of the economy.

It is stupid, painfully so. I disagree, though, that it's good retail politics to anyone but the GOP, who feel as slighted as Duke's basketball coach.

Most people in America face challenges every bit as tough for them as Obama's are for him, and I don't think the average person is going to sympathize with the jerk who begrudges them a basketball pool, or some time with Jay Leno. I don't think anyone sees Barack Obama filling out a March Madness bracket, or sitting on Jay Leno's couch, and thinks, "Man, if I had to do that, I would totally eff my job up!"

If the Republicans are smart, they'll stick to the substance here. While the public seethes about the AIG bonuses, and pressure mounts on beleaguered Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner, they can rake in the political points. Wasting time by accusing the President of wasting time won't help them, or us.
