Give
Adam Brickley credit. As the founder of the "
Draft Sarah Palin" blog, he spotted
Sarah Palin's potential a year and a half before most Americans knew who she was.
His prescience earned him a lot of attention, including an appearance on
Colbert, and some love from
The New Yorker.
So it's not surprising that his recent blog post speculating that
Gregg would make an excellent VP choice quickly generated buzz. Blogger
Matthew Miller jumped on the idea, taking
it to the next level. He argued that Gregg should consider running for
president.
This, of course,
sounds absurd, but should it?
Consider this; should the fiscally conservative Gregg continue eloquently
taking on President Barack Obama, Gregg -- who was once a New England Republican many conservatives merely
tolerated -- could become a real hero to conservatives. (It may turn out that by accepting and then turning down the Secretary of Commerce position -- Gregg made an incredibly shrewd move.)
Also worth considering is the fact that Republicans are worried about becoming a regional party. Nominating a Northeastern Republican -- who is stylistically quite different from, say
George W. Bush -- might help to quell that sentiment -- and put some non-Southern states in play.
Moreover, as a Senator from New Hampshire, one has to assume Gregg would have a leg up in winning the important New Hampshire Primary (though it didn't' seem to benefit former Senator
Bob Smith). A Gregg entry would also change the dynamics, potentially causing the most harm to
Mitt Romney.
Of course, it's so far out that this is pure speculation. Still, it's an interesting idea -- and Brickley does have a track record of spotting potential candidates before anyone else. In fact, right now, over at Race for 2012, Brickely is currently
polling readers to see what they think of a Gregg candidacy. I'll be keeping a close eye on Gregg.
