Squeaker In New York Special Election

Fairly or not, the results of the election today in New York's 20th Congressional district will be interpreted as a barometer of President Obama's tenure so far and, Republicans hope, the makings of a GOP comeback in 2010 (for more on that, read Mark).

So where do we stand? It's damn near a tie. With all precincts reporting, Republican Jim Tedisco and Democrat Scott Murphy are separated by only 65 votes, with Murphy slightly ahead. That's Franken-Coleman territory.
Murphy held the slim lead over Tedisco in the race to replace Kirsten Gillibrand, who was appointed to the U.S. Senate to succeed Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.

The special election drew an unusual level of national attention, and both candidates had financial support from their national parties and political action committees - mostly spent on increasingly negative television ads, which bothered supporters of both candidates.

Now it looks like the election will come down to absentee ballots, which don't have be turned in until April 13. Stay tuned...

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.
