In a significant gesture of support for the majority leader, President Obama has agreed to be the
featured guest at a fundraiser for Sen. Harry Reid. The
Times says the event will be held May 26 in Las Vegas and money raised will go directly to Reid's re-election campaign. He's expected to face an uphill race in 2010. Republicans are salivating at the prospect at ousting the Dem leader.
The still-unannounced presidential trip reflects the close ties the president and the Senate leader have developed during their time together in Congress as well as the first frantic months of the Obama administration.
Mr. Reid has so far delivered in the Senate for Mr. Obama and his efforts organizing the Democratic Party in Nevada were considered an important factor in Mr. Obama easily carrying the usually Republican state.
This will be the first fundraiser of Obama's tenure as president. Last week he made the first political endorsement of his presidency,
backing Scott Murphy in
New York's squeaker of a special election.
