Ted Stevens Case: Sarah Palin Denounces...Herself? Clears...Bill Ayers?

    Posted:
    04/2/09

Now that Attorney General Eric Holder has dropped charges against Alaska Senator Ted Stevens, a move which could vacate Stevens' convictions, Alaska Governor and 2012 hopeful Sarah Palin might want to gently walk back from this statement:

Give Sarah Palin credit: She stung fellow Republican and Alaskan Sen. Ted Stevens on Monday after he was found guilty of lying on financial disclosure forms. Palin basically said Stevens was guilty as charged.

"The verdict shines a light on the corrupting influence of the big oil service company up there in Alaska that was allowed to control too much of our state," Palin said.

"And that control was part of the culture of corruption that I was elected to fight, and that fight must always move forward regardless of party affiliation or seniority or even past service."

That was just after Stevens' conviction. Note that she gives herself a pass for "pallin' around" with a convicted felon:

    Here's what Palin says now:

"Senator Stevens deserves to be very happy today. What a horrible thing he has endured. The blatant attempts by adversaries to destroy one's reputation, career and finances are an abuse of our well-guarded process and violate our God-given rights afforded in the Constitution.
Yeah, especially that Governor who accused Stevens of being part of the "culture of corruption that I was elected to fight." That was horrible!

But the thing I really love about this is the reconciliation that must naturally occur between Palin and President Obama.

Attorney General Holder hasn't said that he's dropping the charges because he believes Stevens to be innocent, but rather that the prosecution didn't provide the defense with certain information:
After careful review, I have concluded that certain information should have been provided to the defense for use at trial. In light of this conclusion, and in consideration of the totality of the circumstances of this particular case, I have determined that it is in the interest of justice to dismiss the indictment and not proceed with a new trial.
Fair is fair, though. If his convictions are voided, he is innocent in the eyes of the law, and Palin is certainly justified in embracing this. That's why I look forward to her apologies to Barack Obama and William Ayers for this:
Sarah Palin is pulling out the stops - in the aftermath of the running mates' debate, the Republican vice presidential nominee today accused the Democratic candidate for president, Barack Obama, of "palling around with terrorists.''
Ayers, too, is innocent in the eyes of the law, maybe more innocent than Stevens, since he was never even convicted.

So, how about it, Sarah? Let's let the healing begin.
