Gay Marriage Passed in Vermont; Veto Imminent

Yesterday, Vermont's House of Representatives voted overwhelmingly to legalize gay marriage by a 95-52 vote, echoing the state Senate's earlier 26-4 vote. But the bill is now seemingly destined for a veto on the desk of Republican Governor Jim Douglas.

Wait a minute! Vermont has a Republican governor?!?

That's right! Vermont - the land of Ben, Jerry, and Howard Dean - has elected Republican Jim Douglas to its highest office four times in a row. Apparently the state is so open-minded that they wanted to balance out their Socialist U.S. Senator with a right-wing Governor.

But now they're facing the consequences of that even-handedness. Douglas has vowed to block gay marriage, and the bill's supporters in the House are five votes short of the two-thirds majority they need to override his veto.

We imagine that there might be some angry rhetoric on this summer's Phish reunion tour.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.
