The following editorial appeared inThe Orange County Register on April 15, 2009: It's tea-party time for tax protesters Arnold has switched sides in this battle. Today, overtaxed taxpayers were to gather in Santa Ana, at about 70other California venues and at hundreds of other places across thenation to say they are mad as hell and aren't going to take itanymore. Californians, who pay the nation's highest rates of incomeand sales taxes, have more reason than most to protest. In 2003, anti-tax crusader Arnold Schwarzenegger summed up theircomplaint: "From the time they get up in the morning and flush thetoilet, they're taxed. When they go and get a coffee, they're taxed. They get into their car, they're taxed. They go to the gas station, they're taxed. They go for lunch, they're taxed. This goes on allday long. Tax, tax, tax, tax, tax. Even when they go to bed, you cango to bed in fear that you are going to be taxed while you'resleeping, that there is a sleeping tax." Today tax-crusading Gov. Schwarzenegger is a target of taxpayeranger and frustration after abandoning what he once claimed to be aprincipled anti-tax stance. In February he signed a budget toincrease Californians' sales, income and car taxes by $12.9 billion, then immediately launched a campaign to increase the same taxesanother $16 billion in a special election May 19. We understand taxpayers' complaint, anger and frustration with suchabuse of the power of taxation, and the duplicity behind it. Protests can have little effect other than to vent and generate awider audience for grievances. But in 1773 such a protest in Bostonwas the harbinger of better things when colonials had enough ofoppressive taxation without representation and dumped King George'stea into the harbor. Today's "tea party" protesters' burden is several magnitudes greaterthan their forefathers, as taxes are now imposed on every aspect oflife to a degree unimagined by the colonials. Worse yet, this istaxation ostensibly with representation. But as Gov. Schwarzeneggerproves, that representation can be as deaf to the people as can bean imperious monarch. What was at stake for Massachusetts tax protesters was aproportional pittance compared with the egregious burdencontemporary taxpayers suffer. The Tax Foundation says Californianseffectively pay every dime they earn through April 20 in taxes toall levels of government. That's more than they pay for food, housing and clothing combined, much of which also is taxed. We've previously cited research showing how taxes hurt the state'seconomic competitiveness and disproportionately inflate energycosts. But today's protesters don't need academic proof. "Many are upset with what they see as a transparent socialist agendarapidly being forced on an unwilling population," said Jon Coupal, president of the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association, named afterthe man who in 1978 spearheaded California's most successful taxrevolt to limit property taxes. "When ordinary California citizensfeel that they have been abandoned by their elected leaders as wellas their political parties, they seek alternative means to expresstheir political judgment." This April 15 tax-filing-deadline day, it's our hope that thesetea-party protests provide that impetus. I have the kids today and after we dropped the check in the mail for the IRS, we stopped at a local TEA party. I wanted them to experience a protest. All that was fun and different, even for me. We left after about 15 minutes and as we passed McDonald's the kids thought COOL McDonald's! Oh Please, please can we have McDonald's for lunch. I explained that we just put all the money in that check to the IRS, and because of that, we would have to go home and make due with what we have there. This is not the first time we have not been able to stop when they wanted to, but this time was was an eye opener for them. It was then they understood, what the TEA party was about. I then explained to them about what's happening now and how it will not be fair to them when they grow up, having to pay a debt that they did not take on but the people who run things today have taken on. Needless to say, they were more disappointed about that than not getting McDonald's.

AJ, surely in jest you explained the truth that you & 95% just received the largest tax cut in US history? LOL
Your view is cooked & Crooked, Here is why...
1.91M w jobs in 8 years Vs, 22.7 Clinton jobs via 6 balanced budgets!
Saudi w more than doubled the deficit to $12T+ bringing on a Jr. Depression with $30T+ spent in 8 years creating just `1.91M jobs as 24M new workers entered the US Job Market!
Request Is also seemingly unaware that 1/3 of our taxes just pay interest only, on the last 3 Rep presidents $12T+ in unpaid bills.
In 1980 the deficit totaled $774B until Reagan tripled it to $2.4T which Sr. doubled in 4 years to $5.5T by '92 as Clinton thereafter signed 6 Balanced budgets with 4 consecutive surpluses.
Democrat Clinton left the deficit at the $5.5T he inherited with $1T in the Social Security Trust fund, until w spent that too & $1.2T for each $1T received!
As we are still on w's final $3.15T budget until 9/30/09, lacking $700B in every fundamental (Per CBO) like education, police, fire, etc or spending for w's own wars.w's real last budget = $3.85T
The proposed 2010 $3.5T is less than w's '09 $3.85T finale, that lacked targeted Jr. depression Stimulus, benefiting green job creation to 95% of US $2T is needed for US Iraqi redeployment & resupply of US Milt assets moved from or to be left in Iraq!
rw loonies are reprehensible fools!

Oh my God! Someone threw tea bags on the Whitehouse lawn. Did the leftist Brownshirts put the boots to him? This dissent crap can't be tolerated. Disagreeing with the Messi-UH should be punishable by death. Liberals are for tolerance, but there is a limit to that tolerance. It's fine if the dissent is liberal dissent, but this right wing idea that they have free speech has to be stopped. They shouldn't be at anti-Tax Rallys. They should be at work, making money to pay the government, so the government can secretly give it to leftist loser goons who suppress the peoples right to speak, or vote in fair elections. Imagine a bunch of grown people congregating to support upholding the constitution.

Yes, that's right folks....it's "Teabag a Liberal Day" today. And it sounds like some wonderful, patriotic citizen "teabagged" the President on the Whitehouse lawn earlier....sweet.

And just think, just last week probably a good portion of those 'people' who are protesting with their 'teabags'--were worried how a simple 'bow' made America look to the world.
Well, I will say this--this has all convinced me of one thing: we really need to put more money into our education system, because it is obviously subpar at best, and towards treating the mentally ill, because--well, that's obvious.

I addition Pundits post, it is important to mention the HISTORY behind the tea parties. The colonists were angry because of the taxation with no representation in congress. The people protesting today are just merely mad because the poor kid working in McDonalds may see less taken from their checks and that means more money to save help them through school ect. but because dad felt it wasn't necessary to give an extra 3% to fight the bad guys in Afghanistan last year the new president is taking from those who have a little more and giving to people who work three jobs and still can't afford to dine out, which makes it all the more difficult to evade the tax man which means no Disney cruises or new Mercedes or homes with sky high mortgage rates that are beyond what daddy can afford. Its best that continue to work and learn to save and sacrifice like the people who don't have time to protest because of their third shift.

We fought two wars for years, and had the White House, Capitol and nearly every other federal building in DC completely DESTROYED in 1814 to secure our independence....why? Because of TAXES... Now, we sit here and complacently accept this Socialist in the White House who is taxing us to the stratosphere, with massive trillions in debt, and nobody seems to care?? SEND THAT TEA!
