Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele, currently on a "time out" for losing a right-wing congressional district in upstate New York, has received word of Arlen Specter's defection to the Democratic Party.

Not surprisingly, Steele has taken the news with all the grace and discretion of his ex-brother-in-law, Mike Tyson...

Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairman Michael Steele released the following statement today:

"Some in the Republican Party are happy about this. I am not.

Let's be honest-Senator Specter didn't leave the GOP based on principles of any kind. He left to further his personal political interests because he knew that he was going to lose a Republican primary due to his left-wing voting record.

Republicans look forward to beating Sen. Specter in 2010, assuming the Democrats don't do it first."

It's unfortunate that Steele took such a combative tact against Specter. When you really think about it, the chairman could have shown far more empathy, as he can certainly relate to the idea of being despised by Republicans.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.
