Randall Terry Arrested for Trespassing at Notre Dame

If Obama wanted no drama, I guess he should not have said he'd speak at Notre Dame, where the soap opera has been non-stop in the month since the school announced that the pro-choice president would be honored at its commencement ceremonies on May 17.
And if anti-abortion protester Randall Terry didn't want to be thrown in jail, I guess he shouldn't have led a bunch of protesters onto the campus today, rolling baby carriages carrying dolls covered in blood. Oh wait, but for Terry, getting arrested is a goal, so of course he refused to am-scray when campus police tried to throw him off school grounds. After paying a $250 fine, according to the Associated Press, he was released from the St. Joseph County Jail.

Unfortunately for students and school officials, Terry has relocated to South Bend to protest the school's invitation to the president. And yesterday, I received this urgent email from Notre Dame's alumni outfit: "It has come to the attention of the Alumni Association that some Notre Dame alumni recently received a letter from Randall Terry, founder of Operation Rescue, regarding the University's invitation to President Obama to speak at this year's Commencement.''

Now, I didn't get such a letter, and certainly don't feel slighted; any mention of the fetus-waving Terry, a convert to my faith, gives me the completely un-Christian thought that when Joyce said, "Here comes everybody,'' he wasn't kidding. Of course, Terry could say the same of me, and not without reason.

Anyway, some of those who did get such letters have apparently complained: "The Alumni Association wants to assure you,'' it says, "that letter was not sent by either the University or the Alumni Association. It was sent without our permission, approval, or prior knowledge. In addition, we did not provide any alumni contact information to the organization that sent the letter...Maintaining your trust and confidence is paramount.''

Only, somebody did give up those addresses. And more and more, it feels like this particular family fight will be going on for quite some time.
