Time's Halperin Marginalizes the White Man

With the news that Justice David Souter is retiring from the Supreme Court, picking his replacement is the hot topic today. Time's Mark Halperin provides a handy list of ponderables on the subject, but he seems to have one question worked out already. From Rumproast:

Mark Halperin, one of the whitest men in America, wrote the following weird header (accompanied by a stock photo of what I guess is his idea of what a "white man" looks like) to pitch another post that mentions nothing about white men being excluded from consideration to replace Justice Souter:

White Men Need Not Apply

The rest of Rumproast's post made me laugh so hard, I wanted to steal the whole thing. I've redacted the stock photo, but you get the idea.

While Halperin, an AOL Hot Seat contributor, may be essentially correct in making the point that President Obama is very likely to try and balance the court's predominantly pale and male makeup, I have to quibble with his method.

Do you think, sir, that you can boil down the entire White Experience into something as clumsy as a stock photographic image? Is this what you think of us, that all white men are gormless, massive-foreheaded office drones? Do you think for a moment that a candidate for the Supreme Court would look anything like this?

For shame, Mr. Halperin. The very marginalization that you have attempted to highlight, you have, sir, this day to it contributed.

Also, in case you want to check out Mark Halperin's 11 Questions, here are the answers:

1. Yes
2. Yes
3. No
4. No
5. Yes
6. Draw lines in sand with tongues
7. "Cover your mouth, please"
8. Yes
9. Arthur Kade
10. Susan Boyle
11. Duh. The Three Day Rule.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.
