Former presidential candidate John Edwards issued a statement acknowledging that federal investigators are looking into how his campaign spent some of its money. The investigation is likely focused on money Edwards's political action committee paid to his mistress, Rielle Hunter.

In his statement, Edwards said, "I am confident that no funds from my campaign were used improperly. However, I know that it is the role of government to ensure that this is true." Edwards is cooperating with the investigation.

In 2006, Hunter's firm was paid $100,000 for video production. She received an additional $14,086.50 on April 1, 2007, the same day that Edwards' presidential campaign paid the PAC $14,034.61 for a "furniture purchase."

Last week, Politics Daily's editor-in-chief Melinda Henneberger posted about details that recently leaked from Elizabeth Edwards forthcoming book, Resilience.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.
