Former presidential candidate John Edwards issued a statement acknowledging that federal investigators are looking into how his campaign spent some of its money. The investigation is likely focused on money Edwards's political action committee paid to his mistress, Rielle Hunter. In his statement, Edwards said, "I am confident that no funds from my campaign were used improperly. However, I know that it is the role of government to ensure that this is true." Edwards is cooperating with the investigation.
In 2006, Hunter's firm was paid $100,000 for video production. She received an additional $14,086.50 on April 1, 2007, the same day that Edwards' presidential campaign paid the PAC $14,034.61 for a "furniture purchase."
Last week, Politics Daily's editor-in-chief Melinda Henneberger posted about details that recently leaked from Elizabeth Edwards forthcoming book, Resilience.
