Senate looking at 'future of journalism;' Arianna Huffington to testify

With layoffs continuing across the industry and the Boston Globe teetering on the brink of extinction, the Senate will examine "The Future of Journalism" during a Congressional hearing on Wednesday.

Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) will chair the hearing of the Commerce Committee's subcommittee on Communications, Technology and the Internet.

The Capitolist has learned the witnesses will be Steve Coll, former managing editor of the Washington Post, Arianna Huffington, founder of the Huffington Post, James Moroney, CEO of the Dallas Morning News, Marissa Mayer, VP of Google, Alberto Ibarguen, President of The Knight Foundation and former publisher of the Miami Herald, and David Simon, former reporter for the Baltimore Sun, who went on to create such TV series as HBO's "The Wire."

Although it feels like a case of role reversal to see the Senate examine the media instead of the other way around, a House hearing in April trolled similar waters of awkward conversation between the coverers and the covered.

The Capitolist will be at the hearing, and we'll save a front-row seat for fellow Caps.
