Al Franken vs. Heckler

Politico reports that Al Franken had to handle a heckler while out for dinner. He did it a lot differently than I would have:
...a heckler in the bar said, "Hey, funnyman, tell me a story," according to a spy at the bar who actually took notes.

Franken turned and asked, "Are you talking to me?"

"Yes," the heckler said. "Come over here and tell me a story."

"There's a nice way and a wrong way to ask someone a question," Franken told the man.
"What's the wrong way?" the heckler asked.

"The way you just asked me," Franken said.

"What's the nice way?" the man asked, to which Franken replied to come over and ask him politely.
As a former standup comic, I'm proud of Franken for remembering that he's a US Senator now (pretty much), but if someone stepped to me like that when I was out with my special lady, it would have gone something like this:
"Hey, funnyman, tell me a story,"

"Are you talking to me?"

"Yes," the heckler said. "Come over here and tell me a story."

"Okay, there was this one time, when I was out with some friends, this jerk at the bar asked me to tell him a funny story. I took out my cellphone, dialed 911, and told them to send an ambulance for the guy who just got his teeth knocked out. Then I told them to send cops, too, because the guy was still getting his nuts kicked in as he lay there choking on his molars."

"Ha. Good one. I love your act."
Maybe Franken's way was better.

See, when you're doing your act, hecklers are just a part of the job, but once you're off the clock, that's that.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.
