GOP: Waterboarding Never Happened at Gitmo But 'Nemo' Did

In their latest attempt to keep the Obama administration from shutting down Guantanamo Bay too soon - if at all - Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, says the detention camp is getting a bad rep and it should stay opened.

He visited Gitmo last week, and writes in The Hill:

"Guantanamo Bay has been inaccurately portrayed as a site of ongoing detainee torture and mistreatment – nothing could be further from the truth. We have done a grave injustice by allowing widespread misperceptions of the facility to be perpetuated."

He goes on to say that, "contrary to popular belief," waterboarding never happened there, that in many ways, prisoners are treated better there than at any "normal" prison, they have access to movies like "Oceans 13" (I mean, who wouldn't like a movie in which you get to see both Brad Pitt and George Clooney?!) and "Finding Nemo," there's no solitary confinement, and they get to eat more than 2,000 a day with the prison's fine food plan.

"The public may not realize how unique and irreplaceable this facility is," Chaffetz says. "Should we close it, there is no equivalent alternative. Guantanamo Bay has natural geographic barriers which keep detainees far from American civilians."

As I mentioned yesterday, there's now more proof it's not just Republicans pushing back against an early shutdown of Gitmo. Politico reports today that Democrats are "ganging up" on President Obama's plans - or lack thereof.

"They say, 'We're going to close Guantanamo.' OK, fine. How are you going to do that? That's the question," Rep. Neal Abercrombie, D-Hawaii, told Politico. "They should have had that worked out from the get-go. ...There's this vague game plan that now we're going to leave Guantanamo ... It's allowed it to become a political football."

The GOP also has a fancy new video entitled "Never Again," reminding everyone just who exactly is at Guantanamo Bay - and what their crimes are, asking, "How does closing Guantanamo Bay make us safer?"

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.
