U.S. Senator Roland Burris (D-IL), who has given the word "embattled" a new level of depth, is getting ready to run for reelection.Of course, it's not technically reelection, because he wasn't elected in the first place, only appointed by disgraced Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich. Also, it isn't reelection because there is absolutely zero chance that he will win.
From The Hill:
Sen. Roland Burris (D-Ill.) wants to keep his job in the Senate and may run for reelection, but he's holding off his formal decision a few weeks until he knows if he can raise enough campaign money.
Burris told The Hill in an exclusive interview Thursday that he has spent his first 90 days in office getting adjusted to his new job and surroundings, and has just started to turn his attention to his reelection prospects.
"I'm moving into a phase now where I will be talking to people and assessing the opportunities in terms of my ability to raise the funds and stay here," he said.
Democrats have signaled they may not want Burris to come back.
If Burris goes ahead with his campaign, he's got two very daunting numbers staring at him.
The first is 5. As in the 5% he gets in a poll for a potential Democratic primary.
The second is 845. As in $845, the total number of dollars he fundraised last quarter. You can't even run for Student Council on that kind of budget.
