Meghan McCain Hit by WHCA Dinner Gossip

Meghan McCain is the subject of anonymous gossip reporting that makes it sound like she pulled a Joe Pesci on a security guard at the White House Correspondents Association Dinner Saturday night:

The problem? She had only two tickets, but brought two friends.

"The security guard sent her to talk to someone to sort out the situation, but Meghan got bratty and nastily told him, 'We'll just stand here then,' like an insolent child," our source said, adding that after dealing with the guard, "She muttered to her friends, 'Does he even know who the f--- I am?' "

Before I break this down, I'd like to note that my fellow Meg admirer, Hot Air's Allahpundit, is all too ready to find Meg guilty until proven innocent: (shakes head sadly)

Maybe it's all an act designed to drum up controversy and increase sales of her book when it comes out? Or maybe Meggie's actually a hardcore Limbaugh Republican and this is all part of a clever false-flag operation designed to discredit "progressive" conservatives? Help me out here; I'm grasping at straws. I feel like a guy who just found out he has a little sister he never knew about - and it's Paris Hilton.

All kidding aside, I am prepared to believe one of two things about this. First, it's complete crap. As a journalist, I know the importance of anonymous sources, but the attribution here is really weak, even for a gossip page. they gave more info on their cheatin' blind gossip item at the end.

The biggest hole in this story, of course, is that they have Meg saying "Does he even know who the f--- I am?" So, Meghan McCain is pissed off, and she only says "f---" once? Not f---in' likely. If you've ever read Meg's Twitter feed, you know a single f-bomb isn't even a warm-up. She even out-curses me, by a lot!

The second possibility is that the story is true-ish, with hater-esque embellishments to make Meghan look bad. For instance, even the anonymous source maintains that whatever Meg said, she said it to her friends. I remember making a similar statement to someone on the Blue ticket line at the Inauguration when a policeman wouldn't jump me in line (another one did later). It was a joke.

Plus, y'know what? Famous people get to be a little annoyed, just like the un-famous. It's quite possible that there was supposed to be an extra ticket there, or that Meg had made other arrangements with the event staff that the anonymous leaker was unaware of. That happens all the time. You call the video store, and the clerk says, "Sure, we have a copy of Breakin' 3: Acoustic Boogaloo, but when you get there, nada.


I think too many people are looking for a reason to throw Meghan McCain under the celebrity bus. The right would much rather pin a "brat" tag on her (was Laura Ingraham at the dinner?), and I'm sure lots of other people are drinking Meg Haterade just because she gets so much attention.

On the other hand, I not only like Meghan McCain, I admire her. It is for that reason that I wouldn't care if she got hammered, threw a glass of ice water on the President, and did a table-dance in the middle of dinner. Her free spirit is a big part of her appeal.

Here's the real deal, though. Gossip reporter or not, the one thing missing from this report is anything resembling the following: "We contacted Ms. McCain to confirm the report..."
