Dr. Rand Paul, son of 2008 Republican Presidential candidate and fundraising juggernaut Ron Paul, announced his candidacy for US Senator from Kentucky in 2010. He teased the announcement on his Twitter feed, but let the cat out of the bag on the Rachel Maddow Show:
As a candidate, Paul's stands on the issues position him as a sort of "Ron Paul Lite."
As enumerated on his website, he mixes more traditionally Republican ideas with Libertarian buzzwords. Like his dad, Rand Paul opposes the Iraq War, dings the Federal Reserve, and pushes back against the department of Education.
Still, the emphasis is more on traditional red meat issues like guns and tax cuts, which might help him enjoy broader support than his dad. If his father's supporters show even a little bit of loyalty to Rand Paul, I pity the fool that runs against him. Ron Paul has an intensely loyal, well-organized, and generous following.
