RNC Chairman Michael Steele Opposes New Marriages?

RNC Chairman Michael Steele advanced a new argument against gay marriage today, but in the process, seems to have also painted a target on matrimony itself.

Speaking to a Republican convention in Georgia, Steele advanced the idea that gay marriage is bad for small businesses:
"Now all of a sudden I've got someone who wasn't a spouse before, that I had no responsibility for, who is now getting claimed as a spouse that I now have financial responsibility for," Steele told Republicans at the state convention in traditionally conservative Georgia. "So how do I pay for that? Who pays for that? You just cost me money."
Um, Mike, isn't that what happens whenever anybody gets married? They start out not being a spouse, then become spouses, thereby costing "you" money?

Lee Stranahan takes Steele's logic a bit further:

So, Steele isanti-gay and anti-baby.

My favorite part of this, though, is Steele's delusional evaluation of his new approach:
Steele said that was just an example of how the party can retool its message to appeal to young voters and minorities without sacrificing core conservative principles.
Sure, the way to attract new voters is to completely destroy their and their friends' ability to ever have a family. Or does Steele imagine a hidden generation that has no gay friends? Maybe a sort of demographic equivalent of the Oceanic Six?

For how long will sensible, rank-and-file Republicans continue to let their leadership waste time trying to build a magical Way-Back Machine?

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.
