Capitol Hill Bureau Chief
After yesterday's troublesome Mason-Dixon poll results for Sen. Harry Reid in Nevada, the pollsters at Quinnipiac University have another dose of bad news for Democrats.
The
poll shows New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine with a 53% disapproval rating, compared to 38% of Jersey voters who approve of the job he's doing. Of greater concern, among the bi-partisan group of registered voters polled, 54% say Corzine does not deserve to be reelected, with 61% of independents saying Corzine should not get four more years.
Corzine has cut $2 billion in spending as governor, and he proposed raising taxes
to close the state's $4.4 billion budget shortfall this year.
New Jersey holds its primaries in two weeks, when Republicans will choose who will face Corzine in the governor's race in the fall. The poll shows Christopher Christie, a former prosecutor, leading Corzine in a head-to-head match up 45% to 38%.
The good news for Corzine is that he'll be able to focus on a single opponent after the Republican primary, said Clay F. Richards, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. "Once the primary is over, Corzine will put on his million-dollar golden gloves and start to fight."
