UPDATE: The GOP's Great New Idea?

UPDATE: Notch a badly needed victory for Michael Steele. The RNC decided to go with the toned-down resolution (described below), and are now claiming that the re-branding stunt was a PR victory in that it made people "properly fearful" of Democrats. To hear the RNC tell it, everyone is more afraid of the Dems because a meaningless edict urged that party to "stop pushing our country towards socialism and government control."

ORIGINAL POST:

How strange it is to watch a once-proud political party descend into the abyss of irrelevance. If you think I am overstating the case, consider the latest dust-up taking place inside the Republican National Committee. You see, a resolution has been put forth in that distinguished body which, no kidding, proposes that the Democrats rename themselves the "Democrat Socialist party."

While they are at it, might I also suggest the official passage of the following taunt: Hey, Democrats, if you love Socialism so much, why don't you marry it?

But seriously, the stupidity of the Rush Limbaugh-like name calling is even too much for Chairman Michael Steele, who has discouraged fellow RNC members from pushing for an honest-to-God vote on this nonsense. Instead, the all important committee will likely adopt a resolution that condemns "the Democrats' march to socialism." Well, at least they seem to be attempting to clean up their grammar.

The news of this internal battle comes, ironically enough, on a day when Steele declared that the GOP was through apologizing. Funny, other than those offered to Limbaugh by those who had the nerve to criticize the talk-show God, I don't recall any Republican apologizing. But, hey, whatever. The re-branding effort is now, officially, in full effect. Why? Because Steele says it is.

The good news for what's left of the party of Reagan? Things surely can't get much worse. Can they?

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.
