While this new ad from the National Organization for Marriage (or LATENT) comically reminded me of Mr. Show with Bob and David's "What's a Gagortion?" sketch, it's also the latest example of an emerging trend: using children as cover for bigotry. Here's the ad: (h/t Jason Linkins)
I think that the people behind this newish ad from panicky gay marriage freakout group National Organization for Marriage intended this to read as some sort of plaintive explication of how being asked to consider the possibility of gay marriage will make children fundamentally confused. This seems weird to me -- after all, it's not the concept of gay marriage that's likely to confuse children, it's homosexuality itself. Seems to me that once you get your kid over that hump, the concept of marriage becomes the easy part.
I agree, and I think this strips bare the notion that this is about anything but the gayness. In a child's mind, why would anyone oppose a union of 2 consenting adults who love each other? In fact, I defy anyone to explain to a child how preventing, and ending, marriages actually protects marriage?
This is NOM's cunning linguistic reach-around. By claiming to protect marriage, they can try to avoid the stink of being a hate group. The fact is, though, that they are not trying to protect anything. It is with this lie that they give themselves away. If they had a clear conscience, and God on their side, they'd call it what it is: denying, or refusing, the right of gay people to marry.
Here's an example. I oppose the right of pharmacists to refuse to dispense certain medications based on non-medical criteria. As such, I don't go around calling myself a Pharmacy Protector. I am an opponent of derelict pill-counters. Courage of my convictions, and all that.
I do have to give NOM props, though, for one "innovation." They eschew the tired "Adam and Steve" cliche for the updated, soon-to-be-featured-in-ALL-CAPS-blog-comments "Anna and Eve." That's probably all the progress we can expect out of them.
Finally, as a parent, I try to draw on my own experience. When I was a kid, you know what confused me? This book that my parents exposed me to, that had a guy with, like, a bag of wives, who went around killing people and cutting off a piece of each victim's penis. It made "Silence of the Lambs" look like a Busytown book. I'd be careful about exposing kids to that until they're older.
Rationalizing will not make homosexuality right. It is homesexuality itself, that is fundamentally wrong!

Yes of course to be rational is beyond the capability of the fearmongers.

Why is homosexuality wrong? Since the USA is a nation of laws not a theocracy, please explain yourself. Remember use the law not your religion, separation of church and state, and freedom from government sponsored religion. Can you defend your statement now?

Yes, by all means--please explain how you came to your conclusion? How is homosexuality wrong? How is it a danger to heterosexual marriage? And if you could, please refrain from religious references--try to answer it from a scientific viewpoint, or any other viewpoint for that matter, outside of religion.

My buddy in the Pentagon leaked the new "Gay Military Contract" to me, here it is, you read it here first:
1. You are entering the Armed Services of the United States under the following conditions;
A. You will submit to monthly HIV tests in order to secure the military blood supply and prevent transmission of said HIV to innocent personnel.
B. You will be housed in HEQ's (Homosexual Enlisted Quarters), separate from the heterosexual service members. You are forbidden from fraternizing in heterosexual service members rooms, nor they in yours.
C. Contracting venereal disease while in service will result in automatic Dishonorable Discharge.
D. You are here to serve this nation, not "cruise" the heterosexual ranks. Any sexual harassment of heterosexual service members will result in an automatic Dishonorable Discharge.
There's more, but it's mostly legal mumbo jumbo. Sounds fair to me.

my husband is in the military, and there are many many openly homosexual people. now they have to identify themselves and sign a contract? thats silly. bottom line is marrigae is a right, and to not allow to adult individuals to get married is a civil rights issue. your religion or opinion may tell you that it is wrong, but it doesnt matter. the great thing about our country is the seperation of church and state. another couple's marriage doesnt affect yours. and it doesnt hurt kids either. God loves us all as we are, and he is the only one we answer to. Gay people dont need to answer to YOU. we all live our lives they way we choose and only God can say if we did right or wrong. dont forget- judge not least you be judged. and not one of us is perfect. so get of your high horse and stop masking bigotry as religion.

Marriage was created by God between a man and a women period. God has made His judgment on the issue already when he created male and female. May God protect our children.

So answer them, with knowledge and openness. Do not resort to fear and hate. Adam and Steve do not hurt Adam and stephani's love and commitment. You have to carefully teach children to hate others for being who they are. Are you guilty?

We are not a theocracy people. Any objections to homosexualality based on a book of religion does not hold water or sense. Country of laws people, what part of seperation of church and state do you not understand. Laws based on hate and religion are not laws only sharia (religous) edicts. All men are created equal. Marriage is a legal matter, not religous. If you choose to be married in a church it is a formality. You always have to register your marriage whether in a church, notary, judge or whomever. That makes it a legal issue not a religous one.

Fear and religous zealotry are the reasons giles. Not bothering to know or express empathy, or gaining knowledgeis another reason. Clinging to dogma and having an obscene idea of superiority is the downfall of the thinking person.

Why is pedophilia, bestiality or necrophilia wrong? Why can't NAMBLA just go out and openly find boys to blow them? Why can't I put liberals in a dungeon and torture them? Why can't a man have sex with a pile of steaming feces (same thing as anal intercourse, homo or hetero)? Could it be, because all of the above are just plain WRONG?
How, if gays are allowed in the military, are they going to get around article 125 of the UCMJ which prohibits sodomy?

Typical, you have no logical reason short of hate so you resort to ridiculous comparisons. by the way, gay men are not the only people who enjoy anal sex. Try it before you judge. Sodomy laws, they are discriminatory and intrusive, that is why they are being repealed hell even Texas has repealed these victorian era laws. Who and how two "consenting adults" have sex is none of yours or the governments buisness.

So a divorced heterosexual parent bringing a new boyfriend/girlfriend into the picture (and spending the night) doesn't confuse young children? Maybe heterosexuals need to clean up the mess in their own backyard -- and the 50+% divorce rate before wagging their finger at others. When they outlaw divorce completely, then I will be against gay marriage. Until then, nah. Gays cannot possibly mess it up anymore than heterosexuals already have.
