Former Vice President Dick Cheney delivered what is being billed as a rebuttal speech to President Barack Obama's address on the contentious issue of how best to protect Americans against terrorists. In the blogosphere, Cheney's remarks received intense scrutiny, both for factual accuracy and for the manner in which they were delivered. But one mainstream Republican critic, Senator John McCain, took issue with Cheney's notion that torture procedures such as waterboarding are not only efficacious, but are also morally justified.
Speaking to The Atlantic's Jeffery Goldberg, McCain (himself a victim of torture) said this of Cheney's speech:
"When you have a majority of Americans, seventy-something percent, saying we shouldn't torture, then I'm not sure it helps for the Vice President to go out and continue to espouse that position..."
McCain added:
"...[Cheney] believes that waterboarding doesn't fall under the Geneva Conventions and that it's not a form of torture. But you know, it goes back to the Spanish Inquisition."
You can read Obama's speech here. And Cheney's rejoinder here.
I would like to know where he thinks there is 70% against torture. That is a lie! Take a real poll and find out. I do not know anybody against torture if it saves American lives. McCain is losing his brain along with his stupid daughter. Both should shut up and go away!

For you to say "the ends justify the means" is redundant Do your research. Al Qaeda can justify the 9/11 attack in the same way. They hit us for giving aid to Israel, whom actively has commited terrorist acts in the middle east over the past 10 yrs. Good job Greg, your a contributing factor to terrorism around the world I applaud you and hope you suffer the same at the hands of a like-minded individual.

Aparently the only real pole is one that agrees with your limited understanding of the problem. And the GOP can not understand why its numbers are falling.

Maybe you think you are living in a country of terrorists, but you are not... Over 70% of us think it was a very bad idea to torture people in order to get them to say that 9/11 and Iraq are some how related... A vast majority of us believe in the rule of law, believe that we do not have to become terrorists to defeat terrorists. Those like you who would lower our standards, are, thankfully, in the minority... If that constitution was good enough for 225 years then it surely can stand the test of a few religous idiots... Greg, I can safely say that we will never surrender to your way of thinking... We are stronger than you think!

Torture doesn't save lives. It costs American lives. The Iraq invasion was justified in part by information given under torture. That information about Saddam's "weapons of mass destruction" was false. People will say anything to stop form being tortured - what they say is unreliable.
Look at Cheney and Rumsfeld. They torture because of the kind of men they are - not because it works.

I know many people who believe that torture is inhumane and immoral. When McCain and Obama were running for President both said that they would STOP torture. So you keep a very narrow circle of friends... You and I both know that politicians would not run against an issue as strongly as McCain and Obama did if they were not fairly sure that the public (their voters) were also against torture. So, like it or not, most of us are ashamed of the evil of torture and believe that it does not get the info wanted, and it demeans us in the eyes of potential allies. Claire jentsch Claire Jentsch

Greg Im with you on this one. I may not be a member of the Party of No, but I refuse to join in on the party of: Lets by car industries, banks and insurance companies and control them all. Or the party that believes Gay Sex is a normal and natural way of life, while its ok to rip a baby out of its mothers womb, no this would not be considered torture by their standards nor would having your head decapitated, what a bunch of fools.

As a soldier and a POW who was tortured McCain knows so much more then a draft dodging lieing man. Cheney is not fit to even walk in McCain's shadow. He was the rights darling until he lost, he does not deserve such disrespect and venom from anyone, you or especially Cheney.

the majority of people in this country, do not agree with torture...thats why we elected Obama, because he holds that same sentiment..
I have an extreme amount of respect for McCain, remember he is a war hero, he should know about torture, he lived through it, I trust his moral compass on this subject.
Im sure you would like those like him to shut up and go away, you would much rather this beautiful nation be under the thumb of such great minds as Limbaugh, Beck, Hannity, Cheney...etc...etc...etc...
Go ahead, push what great minds you have left in your party out...that won't change the fact, that what you seem to embrace, will not serve your or those like you well..

Why doesn't McCaine just become a democrat. These democrats once were able to hide but we can spot them a mile away now. Who didn't know Spector wasn't a liberal, same with McCaine. Why do you think he couldn't get the votes to beat Obama. McCain did everything he could to lose the race. Who would really call a time out on a race, someone who didn't want to race?

Cheney is a Nazi-like manipulator using fear tactics to get ignorant Americans to believe that torture is a good thing. Hitler did the same thing and the majority of the German people did not realize it until after the war. The United States had 500 megaton neuclar bombs pointed at it for 50 years during the cold war and never used torture to gather intellegence. Why would you ever think it would be o.k. to use it against a few islamic extremist.??? Wake up buddy

And as you drive everyone else out of the party, will thae last on please turn out the lights?
To those who say we were so innocent about the torture issue in WW11 must never have had a member in the family who served on the front lines in that conflict. I imagine almosty everything the US Marine Corps had to to adopt tactically to fight the Japanese in the Pacific campaigns would be considered torure in today's society. Unrestricted submarine warefare was a basis to prosecute the Nazis after the war, yet we folloed a basically same policy ourselves while fighting the Japanese. Your selective memory and false indignation is ludicrous. We were attacked by these terrorists on 9/11, they fought against us on the fields of Afghanistan and were captured there. No one claims them as part of thei military, not even the Arab countries and Islamic's they say they are fighting for. I guess someone on your own family would have to be killd by one of these guys before you gotmad enough to say enough is enough and try to eliminate them from the face of this earth? I asked this when the first few left wing , peace at any price yahoos started voicing their concerns for these terrorists years ago, just what does it take to piss a liberal off enough to fight back? Seems to me a whole lot more than we have suffered already.

McCain is a true Patriot in every sense of the word. Dick Cheney is what he is... The GOP (all 21% of them) can worship Cheney all they want but he still is what he is. NO amount of spin will change the truth about his administration and what they did to America. Worship away.

For a long time now I've wondered if Cheney is seeking revenge on Bush for not pardoning Libby on Bush's last day in office. I read that Cheney stormed into the Oval office with some aids and shouted that Bush HAD to pardon Libby. Apparently, the two haven't spoken since, because Bush feels Cheney destroyed the Bush Legacy. I'm no fan of Bush, never was, but every day Cheney comes out on tv with more toxins, Bush looks better for sticking to principle on the last day, at least, and refusing to be controlled by the mirror image of Saddam Hussein. Psychology buffs will see projection in this. Bush hated Hussein in a very personal way because he identified with this other man who shot people in the face. I stop short of calling him Evil, because that is God's to do, but Scott Peck in "People of the Lie" defines evil people as self centered narcissits who murder either the spirit/s or body/ies of others. Dr. Peck wrote "The Road Less Travelled"-- the only non-fiction book with the distinguished honor of occupying the NY Times Best-Seller list for TEN YEARS STRAIGHT. We should all strive to be like Peck. Pamela

Senator John McCain is not disagreeing with Chaney, he is agreeing with him. The word efficacious mean effective, but he goes on to say , But are also morally justified. That means it is not an immoral act, but a good act , justified , meaning we are within our rights to do it. So before everyone keeps thinking McCain is some traitor , he isnt. He was upholding all the military tactics, GOD BLESS AMERICA, which is US AMERICANS. SOME already see through OBAMA talking out of both sides of his mouth, others will see soon enough he is selling our country out due to lack of experience. Talking about secret military things on the TV will harm all of us, with no regard to race, color or culture. WE all will suffer this one.
