The Pew Research Center releases a massive new survey that tells us all kinds of things about our political landscape. The headline is that independent voters rule in the age of Obama.
Independents make up 39 percent of the electorate, according to the survey of 3,013 people in March and April. That's a 70-year high. Democrats are at 33 percent while Republicans are at 22 percent.
Republicans are at a "very low ebb," center director Andy Kohut said yesterday at a briefing. The survey shows GOP women are becoming Democrats while men are tending to move to the independent column. That has increased the gender gap between the two parties.
Another effect the survey found of the movement from GOP to independent: It's made the independent category more conservative when it comes to expanding the social safety net and getting the government more involved in the private sector.
At the same time, it found that independents are "much closer" to Democrats than Republicans on values issues such as race, gay rights, religion and national security. Kohut calls them "conflicted centrists."
The survey throws a wrench into the theory that the GOP is down to a very conservative nub. It shows that the breakdown of self-described conservatives, moderates and liberals within the party has not changed.
Kohut attributed the exodus from the GOP less to the party's ideas than to "perceived Republican failures in performance." Republicans are demoralized -- only 24 percent said their party is doing a good job upholding its principles. The party is also behind the times on demographics. It is aging and remains "steadfastly white and non-Hispanic," Kohut said.
Pew reprised a couple of questions from presidential election exit polls and found an enormous shift away from moral values as a voter concern. Asked what one issue would matter in their presidential vote, 10 percent said moral values, down from 27 percent in 2004. By contrast, economy/jobs rose from 21 percent in 2004 to 50 percent now.
let the funeral dirge begin. can't wait to sing the kyrie over the corpse of the republican party.

Read the article again, it's not just the republican party but also the democrat party losing membership. Maybe that's a good thing. I don't believe all democrats are as far left as you would like to believe. I also think many republicans are not as far right as they are being portrayed. I think it would have been wiser for Arlen Specter to opt for the Independent Party vs. the democrat party. I think intelligent voters would have a hard time believing a 30 year republican woke up one morning and decided to become a democrat. Look for different parties to start taking shape and power, i.e., Independent, Conservative, Liberal, etc.

So what this survey confirms is that the largest voter block really has no formal party or candidates to vote for. What this country needs is some good independent candidates to run. The problem is that it is almost impossible for an independent to match the money that either the Democrats or Republicans can spend which keeps many qualified people from even trying. Without some type of campaign funding reform it will continue to be difficult for any independent to gain office, especially at the national level. What good is being classified an independent when you have to vote for either a Democrat or Republican anyway.

You make some very valid points. I guess what I'm trying to say is that now might be the time to seriously consider this Third Party. We saw how effective the internet was for the dems this last go-around. That might be the cheaper way to get the word out there. I really believe not all dems are dems and not all reps are reps but something "other". Hell, I don't know, maybe we'll call it the American Party. Has a nice ring to it.

When either party would start "common sense" finance (i.e a balanced budget), understanding and adhereing to The Constitution (or changing it within it's prescribed ways), and again having 3 Branches of government that function as prescribed in The Constitution, then and only then will we have a chance to again become a functioning nation.
The "power" hungry nature of both parties are leading us down a path toward anarchy, or possibly worse, the Utopian & idealistic Democrats are intentionally or unintentionally leading us to Socialism where only the Political class wins.

I think the same thing applies now as it always has: push the country too far to the right or left and the voters rebel. This is nothing new. Bill Clinton learned this the hard way in 1994, when Republicans swept Congress. The voters did not want the health care plan he and Hillary were pushing, plus other things. The GOP learned it in 2006 when they lost control of Congress for spending a lot of money, plus corruption scandals (Jack Abramhoff), Terri Schiavo, etc. In other words, both parties preaching one thing and doing another. All Presidents try to walk that fine line of being moderate/independent. But it is tougher than anyone can imagine, as you have the fanatical elements of the party constantly nagging at you, plus trying to appease those who elected you.

bout time people have started voting with their brains and not their hearts...People want a NEW direction..70% of people with college educations voted for Obama 70%.... Gone are the days of the OLD Grand Party...People want to hear about topics, issues. Not name calling and bashing. It didn't work in the election and its not working NOW. The party of NO NO NO needs traction, substance and ideas. The people they are now sending to do so are not getting the job done. Rush? Newt? Steele? Cheney? Jindal? Palin? Sorry we think not.. Those who control the present, will control the future. Those who once controled the past cannot control neither the present or the future...

I used to be a democrate and I have a college education, I did not cote for a democrate and never will again. I have watched them mock and berate everyone around them over and over again. I am so sick of the democratic party, I left. Am now an Independent and proud of it. the young kids who voted for him are just spoiled and have no clue what its like to suffer. They grew up in good times and had everything handed to them. College or no college these kids are blind to the truth.

If nothing else, the media sure has pointed out just how shallow our current politicians are proving themselves to be. This same media is also pitting American against American. They throw out these loaded questions that manage to get one side and/or the other all lathered up. One almost has to believe that the media is in bed with the current administration. Does anybody know what happened to that one site that was supposed to show us where all the monies were going too? All of a sudden we have all these pro-Obama sites popping up everywhere. Again, to reiterate, I'm not saying all dems are far left and all repubs are far right. Let's hope that come 2012 we have a third party in place that can give a lot of sensible Americans a better feeling about their government.

Just get the RR out of politics, and we will have a whole new ball game.
No, sandsnnydz, I don't trust our media. I think Tommy C. thinks he's going to be the next American Idol. Actually, I think this entire Politics Daily bunch feels that way. I've read quite a lot of your posts and we seem to be on the same page with regards to most matters. The difference might be that I think most of our politicians must go. We need something more than this dem/rep thing. Our country has outgrown 2 parties. We need a strong third party to absorb the good from all other parties. I've got a problem with very far left and very far right if you know what I mean.

Desperate actions from desperate politicians unable to cope with the realities left behind from the W/Cheney years. The Republican Party continues to shrink, unable to recognize that what they want does not fit the mood of the country that they want to represent. Once again, the GOP is out of touch, void of ideas, ideals and leadership. Their hope is only to delay the inevitable for as long as they can, because the fear, gloom and doom in their hearts, thinking about Obama with 60 votes in the Senate, overrides any common sense they may have had. These are dire days for Americans who believed in the Republican Party and find instead, that it is the Party who has abandoned their cause, it is the Party that deceived them and it is the Party that, using lies, deceit and divisiveness, failed them and the Nation. 2010 approaches and the 'More of the same' Republican politicians will receive their just rewards. Gone are the Reagan Democrats and Independents. Disillusioned women voters are swinging to the left, recognizing that the 'Good Old Boys Club' isn't about to make room for them; Palin isn't a solution, she's more of the same old problem, one of the boys. The male voting block that Limbaugh once bragged that he had in his back pocket are flowing over into the Independent Camp, because at least there, without treachery, lies and deceit, they can find politicians who recognize the difference between right and wrong. And for those remaining in the GOP, wondering what happened to the Party of Reagan, these names may spirit through their minds: Kenji Doihara, Koki Hirota, Seishiro Itagaki, Heitaro Kimura, Iwane Matsui, Akira Muto and Hideki Tojo.....all executed after WWII for Torturing & Waterboarding American Servicemen. The United States tortured and W. Bush & Dick Cheney on several occasions stood before the American people and told us that "The United States does not torture!" They lied! The Republican Party has cast aside all honor, dignity and integrity. Shamefully they believe they represent the Nation, while in fact, they represent their own inabilities to acknowledge their failures and assume the responsibilities of their leaders actions. The GOP had made itself irrelevant politically and clings persistently to an agenda that aligns their Party with terrorists around the globe: "I Hope Obama fails!" The abyss continues to open onto depths where the dreams of the once proud Party Ronald Reagan readily fall. The Republican Party has failed the Nation, Our People and all that we hold sacred as American. Worse yet............they failed themselves! The United States Tortured!

I'm not disagreeing with your views about the current republican party but from what I'm seeing/hearing this current democrat party is no better. Probably worse. Both these parties either have to clean up their acts or hopefully become extinct because they are not doing what we are electing them to do. For every dishonorable republican you throw my way I can do the same with a democrat. Politicians have gotten out of control. It looks as if Dobbs, Pelosi, and Reid are likely on their way out. That's a good day if it happens. On the same token we need a lot of the antigues to move on and make way for modern thinkers. As stated above, I have a difficult time with extremes, be they left or right.

FLIP flop POTUS & DC, indicative of current polling.
Who in AMERICAN stands by their conviction, duh? Fair weathered politics, imagine that.
Will future briefings of CIA with Pelsoi, JEOPARDIZE National SECURITY?
Is America missing the REAL issue? It's not about party, as it may become extinct.
The problem is a qualified leader was NOT elected. Chaos breeds, more of the same, doesn't it? A fox in the hole vs. on the prowl? Will future briefings of CIA with Pelsoi, JEOPARDIZE National SECURITY?
Independent voters are prevented from becoming candidates by un-Constitutional state election laws which favor party candidates. These laws were passed by party politicians for the sole purpose of preventing independent voters from participating in government except as choosing between different kinds of party corruption. For instance, here in Arizona I am required to get 22,000 nomination petition signatures to appear on the ballot for the same office that a Democrat or Republican needs to get about 4,000 signatures for. What independent voters need to do now that they are getting the numbers is to go register as candidates for office, especially state and local offices, go home, and continue their lives, not worrying about whether they will be elected or not. They do not need to be elected immediately in order to change the government. All they have to do is be candidates. They will get some votes even if the news media continues its present policy of publicizing only the candidacies of party candidates. The real battle at the present time is voter registration, which political parties have already lost.
