Why Did Bill Clinton Call Sarah Palin?

That's the question raised by The Daily Beast, who noticed this paragraph hiding out in a New York Times article about Greta Van Susteren:
What I find interesting, though, is the fact that Sarah Palin would task Greta Van Susteren's husband with authenticating the former President's call. Was this a one-off, or just the only one we know about? "John, I'm getting messages from a Robert Abooey, can you check it out?"
In all seriousness, you can't really blame Palin for being leery after the fake French call. Better to do this than to risk the embarrassment of hanging up on the President, as one GOP Congresswoman did shortly after the election.
Also embedded in the story was this strange nugget: Apparently, Greta saved Ana Marie Cox from a severe allergic reaction on a train.
I'm not sure what any of this means, but it has the makings of a hell of an Agatha Christie novel.
On one occasion, Ms. Palin asked (Greta Van Susteren husband John) Coale to check the veracity of a phone call from former President Bill Clinton's office. (During the campaign, she had been fooled by a radio host posing as President Nicolas Sarkozy of France.) He confirmed that Mr. Clinton was indeed trying to reach her.I'm sure the fertile imaginations of our nation's late night comics will fill in that blank repeatedly. Maybe we'll even be treated to the umpteenth remake of that "3 am" campaign ad.
