President Obama Faces Protests Over Prop 8 Silence

At yesterday's White House Press Briefing, Press Secretary Robert Gibbs was asked about the President's reaction to the California Supreme Court's ruling upholding Proposition 8. His response:
I have not talked to the President about it. I think the issues involved are ones that you know where the President stands.
That silence, along with recent pressure on the President to act on discharges of gay soldiers, are the catalysts behind a planned protest this evening, according to Towleroad.com:
President Obama, the alleged "fierce advocate" for LGBT rights, is scheduled to attend a Democratic Party fundraiser at the Beverly Hilton tonight, one day after White House spokesman Robert Gibbs refused to offer any official response to the Supreme Court's decision to uphold Proposition 8 in California.

A Courage Campaign-organized demonstration is scheduled to take place in front of the Beverly Hilton this evening. The group writes: "Let's take this opportunity, just one day after the CA Supreme Court makes its decision on Proposition 8, to show our President our support for his daring promise to our community and to highlight the growing movement towards FULL FEDERAL EQUALITY."
On the one hand, I can understand the White House wanting to stay out of the way on this one. In truth, marriage equality has been doing pretty well without his help.

In the other hand, it doesn't look good when you put out statements about pretty much everything, yet remain silent on such a huge, flawed ruling. The LGBTQ community may have all the faith in the world in President Obama, but it looks like they may be losing patience.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.
