The hits on SCOTUS nominee Sonia Sotomayor just keep on coming. From from former Congressman Tom Tancredo's "a Latino KKK without the hoods or the nooses" on CNN yesterday to Karl Rove's juvenile "Latina woman racist should also withdraw" tweet and Limbaugh's 3-day Latinamania, comes these nuggets from convicted Watergate felon and talk radio host G. Gordon Liddy:
Let's hope that the key conferences aren't when she's menstruating or something, or just before she's going to menstruate. That would really be bad. Lord knows what we would get then.
And if that's not bad enough, he goes on to refer to the Spanish language as "illegal alien".
I understand that they found out today that Miss Sotomayor is a member of La Raza, which means in illegal alien, "the race."
These "respected" mouthpieces of the right wing, listened to by millions, are certainly killing RNC Chair Michael Steele's hopes of a more inclusive party, aren't they? If current elected officials start jumping on this bandwagon, start supporting such statements or refuse to distance themselves from such, watch further flight from the party. Talk of the Republicans as a regional party? By the time they're done, they'll have a district or two in rural Alabama and Texas.
Some, and they are idiots, look at Judge Sotomayor and say: attack, attack, kill. A conservative activist told the New York Times, "We need to brand her." Another told me a fight is needed to excite the base.
Excite the base? How about excite a moderate, or interest an independent? How about gain the attention of people who aren't already on your side?
The base is plenty excited already, as you know if you've ever read a comment thread on a conservative blog. Comment-thread conservatives, like their mirror-image warriors on the left ("Worst person in the woooorrrlllddd!") are perpetually agitated, permanently enraged. They don't need to be revved, they're already revved. Newt Gingrich twitters that Judge Sotomayor is a racist. Does anyone believe that? He should rest his dancing thumbs, stop trying to position himself as the choice and voice of the base in 2012, and think.
Great article, Denise. I have to wonder if the likes of Tom Tancredo and Newt Gingrich (now villifying Sotomayor, to put it mildly) would have the balls to say the things they are if both were still in Congress. I am betting the answer would be "no." Sure, this kind of nonsense whips up a frenzy among the base of the GOP, but really, so what? They already vote reliably Republican. It will win them no new friends, that's for sure.

Do you really want the Congress to be so unbalanced? The Constitution provided for two political parties because of the dangers of one party having too much power. We are now dealing with a Congress and Administration having a spending spree and doing whatever it wants. That's good for feeling power, but it's not good for America. Before you go ballistic, I am a registered Democrat...but I see the damage that the party is doing to our country and I'm really worried.

We'll see how much you "love" it when the time comes to shoulder a rifle in defense of your communistic system. You'll undoubtedly be relieved that gays like you aren't allowed in the military then, won't you, panty boy?

Denise, the woman with more Chins than a Chinese phone book, is talking out of her wide-load ass. Sonia is a racist. Sonia is a sexist. Sonia is a Marxist. Sonia is a traitor that should have her citizenship stripped and hung for treason for belonging to La Raza.
It's time to tear this whole corrupt system down and return to the Constitutional Republic so many have died to defend. Pure democracy is nothing more than tyranny of the mob.

Ms Williams you seem to have caught the same virus that has invaded the democratic party, it's called selective memory syndrome. I thought that the Republicans were bad, but the Democrats are the epitome of Sleaze. Democrats would make Jeffrey Dahmer blush. Their whole existance is rooted in destroying good people. Being a women doesn't give Sotomayor special priviledges, she is not some proverty stricken waif as president Obama is lying about, she is part of the leftist demagoguery. You are listed as a political Junkie, political Flunkie would be more apropos.

Of course the folks you mention, who we might call "professional Conservatives," want to excite their base, no matter how narrow that base may be. That's where the money comes from to support their comfortable life styles. In the process, may they be destroying the Republican Party? May they be killing Conservatism as a political and as an intellectual force? Do they care? They thrive on political defeats, not on victories, and on outrage, not on rationality.
By the way, I very much like your comment about the close similarities between right wing and left wing crazies.

Denise,
You Hostess Twinkie of a woman. You purposely ignore the egregious racism of Sotomayor, and especially her membership in La Raza, a group of unbelievably racist marxist assholes. How can you blithely ignore something that explosive? I am aware that you are a fool of immense proportions, but even someone of your stupidity should be able to see that Sotomayor's racism, and membership in La Raza is a huge problem for the left, Sotomayor, and Obama. Are you stupid enough to think people of all colors won't be outraged as La Raza is googled millions of times in the next several weeks? You would have done yourself, and the readers a service if you hadn't bothered us with your "see no evil" maunderings. BTW, using Think Progress helps your cause a lot. It's founder and funder, George Soros, was a Nazi collaborator in WWII by his own admission. He also is reportedly a supporter of La Raza. You must be proud to be an apologist for evil.

Does anyone remember George Allen? He was labeled a racist calling a political spy a name so obscure the media had to research to find out that it was a slur in a small portion of the world. He lost an election in no small part due to that scandal. Here we have a Latina woman saying the smart she can make better decisions than white men. Her superiority comes from her ethnicity and her femininity. Think of those people, who think they are better only because of their race. What names or groups come to mind? Let alone her statement that, the courts make policy. Certainly the Obama roster can not be so thin that we have to except Sotomayer as the only possible candidate for the job.

the Democrats would like us all to believe that hispanics are not capable of making a decision based on a persons qualifications.. the left would like everyone to believe Hispanics will vote for some one entirely based on their ethnicity only..... they are selling the hispanics short .... saying they are incapable of making an educated decision. Obama wants the Hispanic vote and he thinks by insulting their intelligence he will get their votes? very insulting.....

OK lets talk about really matters with her nomination. The fact that 60% of her rulings are later overturned! Would you want your case to go before someone with that kind of record? Face it people she is NOT qualified! If this is the best Obama can do then we are in real trouble.

As a former Democrat and now an enlightened conservative, I must reject Obama's choice for the Supreme court. Her statements alone should disqualify her from ANY judicial bench. The idea of using her life experiences and feelings to make judicial decisions fly in the face of true Constitutionalists. The duty of a judge is to make decisions based on the law and the Constitution, not on "feel good ideas". As an American first and a Puerto Rican second, I cannot believe just how racist and sexist this country has become...first we elect a man as President because he is black and now we want to appoint a supreme court justice because she is Hispanic and a woman.

I am a "Jewish" Conservative, and a proud American, but no matter what I say my label has already been thumbtacked to my "widows Peak".
The Conservative party has become the Democratic party with "R" at the end. (code name) Conservative party girl
Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid are the proud parents of "twins", The Rnc and The DNC.
Their son little "Barack" receives no discipline from his parents, so he is allowed to run freely with no constraints.
Sonia Sotomayor is born because no discipline from elders breeds a clone from previous "Genes".
The Supreme Court is now becoming a magnet for the undisciplined, from both houses, because if bullies are not defeated, and you cannot count on solid conservatives to apply for the job, folks, the rest is history.

In every way and every day, Conservatives continue to dig away at their own abyss. Led by Limbaugh, the felon Liddy, supported by 'W's Brain' Rove and a host of supporting Neo-Cons, the attacks upon Sotomayor will continue to come and will be equally amusingly absurd. What would you expect from a group who's agenda is "I hope Obama fails"? Americans are still reeling from the attacks upon Obama, his wife, his children and their dog Bo from the Right, who always seems to have what they believe is a better idea that in fact historically has been a complete failure. At a time when Our Nation needed reason and rational thought, Conservative Republicans failed the test, more concerned about their own agenda than Our Nation's needs. The best that the 'Minority Party' is capable of presenting to the American public is just more of the same gloom, doom and fear predictions that they projected whenever their own incompetence was revealed. The deceit, lies and divisiveness that was used to create the havoc continues from the Right, even after a National Election, an election that Neo-cons today want Americans to believe was a mistake. The Right could not fathom the idea that Americans would actually recognize the treachery and dishonor that the Republican Administration heaped upon Our Nation. Worse and sadder yet, those same Conservative Republicans actually believed that their lies, deceit and divisiveness was absolutely necessary, above and beyond the truth. When torture was justified, their failure was complete. 2010 approaches.....Long before then Sotomayor will have taken her seat on the Supreme Court & Franken will have his rightful seat in the Senate. Americans will vote in the midterm elections and recall the continuation of the lies, deceit & divisiveness of the Conservative Republican Party with their agenda of "I hope Obama fails." Come the next morning, the Republican Party will find itself exiled from Our Nation's Politics. Limbaugh's rants will continue to be relished by an even smaller Republican Base that now exists. Perhaps then, Real Republicans will recall what it means to be an member of the United States and remember that honor, dignity, integrity and truth really are essential qualities of people and a political party. Right now, except for a very few Real Republican voices, those who recognize that the time exists for moderation and compromise, the GOP continues to peddle more of their gloom, doom and fear. The President and Vice President of the United States of America authorized the torture and water boarding of prisoners of war. This Nation has tried, convicted, sentenced and executed Japanese soldiers for the same crimes against God's Laws and humanity. Without honor, integrity, dignity or truth, the treachery against Our Nation, by the "Deciders" is now a part of our history. The light, that beacon held within the hand of Lady Liberty, has been extinguished not by al Qaeda, not by bin Laden or terrorists, but by Neo-Con Conservatives unable to act with the reason and rationale expected of their office.

we are swimming thru a sea of racist fear, which has always existed, but has recently been tapped by the ultra conservative fearmongers , such as tom tancredo and newt gingrich, as well the self-serving,self centered, dangerous radio commentaters, such as rush limbaugh, ann coulter, gordon liddy and sean hannity. These people control millions of uninformed or ill- informed americans thru their radio and t.v. comments. Its not even a question of ideology, although the current republican platform does serve as springboard for these racists. Its an overwhelming sense of fear that is being constantly directed towards the most racist and least informed americans.A fear blown entirely out of proportion, by emphasizing the alleged loss of american ideals, language, jobs, and neighborhood housing to various minorities.Until we as a nation are able judge each individual by their own behavior patterns, not as a perceived generalization by a whole race, we will continue to have to live with racism.
