A spat of sorts has emerged between blogger and syndicated columnist Michele Malkin and FOX News talk-show host Bill O'Reilly. At issue is a comment left at Hot Air that characterizes Sonia Sotomayor, President Obama's pick for the Supreme Court, as "militant and socialist." Here's O'Reilly's explanation of the throw-down:
The sniping between Malkin and O'Reilly is good theater, but the underlying issue is really rather mundane. As the comment in question was left by a reader, not one of the many fine writers paid to offer opinion pieces on the site, it is hardly fair to take Malkin to task for its content.
As anyone who has ever checked into a political blog's comment section knows, there's a whole lot of offensive ranting to be found there. But is O'Reilly's suggestion of censorship the answer? His often-repeated assertion that DailyKos "traffics in hatred all day long" is laughable to anyone who has actually followed their comment threads. True, they are full of messages from people who hate Republicans, but there's no more hate there than the kind directed at Democrats on right-leaning sites like Hot Air.
The point is, one person's hatred is another's well-reasoned argument. The portrayal of Sotomayor as militant and socialist is rather commonplace among right wing blog readers, just as are comments that refer to President Obama simply as Hussein. Are such instances offensive? To some, yes, to others, no. But when did O'Reilly of all people become so concerned about restricting opinions that one group or other may find offensive? Isn't that the entire premise upon which his show was founded?
In addition, I just had an e-mail back and forth with Hot Air's Ed Morrissey, who has posted a piece citing all sorts of questionable comments left on both O'Reilly's and FOX's websites.
Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. That in a nut shell is O'Reilly's problem. He went from tabloid TV to a far right program that somehow gave him power and credibility. In his mind he's a voice for the little guy, the blue collar ethnic that's overwhelmed by the rich New York far left. But he's wrong. Over the years he's become very rich and bitter and comes across as a meanspirited bully. The truth is never just the far right or left, it's a grey area, that's hard to pinpoint. He doesn't care. The only real voice of reason on TV is Jon Stewart. He's smart enough to acknowledge at times he's wrong, and that's a quality that really scares Reilly.

I am most certain that you never watch ORielly. I am sure you see the few times he takes a person to task. Nothing wrong with making people accountable for their statements.

tic you need to put down the kool aid. You would follow Jon Stewart right over cliff like Thelma and Louise with that comment. I bet you are no more up to date on issues of today but you can name American Idol winner and every reality program thats on Television. Do us all a favor and you and Jon Stewart take a leave of absence and give us all a break.

Yep, you're right, Jon Stewart is THE voice of reason. He's just a fair, un-biased, middle of the road type of guy. Oops!! You forgot Keith Olberman, another very reasonable guy.........Could you send me some of the very obviously potent hallucinogens you're taking???

The writer, Mr, Knowles apparently doesn't watch O'Reilly very much as he constantly rails against the right wing groups as much as the hate mongering kost. Watch O'Reilly for a week and he has as many people on his program who disagree with him as who agree with him. Stewart is a comedy and certainly doesn't give any legitimate news but yet he is fun to watch.

Jon Stewart is a comedian that thinks he's a political speaker. His commentary is a joke, didn't you know that or are you just stupid.

To be fair to O'Reilly, he isn't as big a nitwit as Limbaugh, Hannity, or Beck.

Jon Stewart the only voice of reason??????????? you're kidding right?!!! Try saying something negative about "empty suit" Obama and you'll see how his voice of reason kicks in. Just so you know, O'Reilly is an independent.

This is exactly the problem we have today and why we are in this mess with a socialist president and watching low-life’s like Al Franken actually get elected. People like you who are getting your news from someone like Jon Stewart - a comedian. This is an 'entertainment' show and truth is bent to get the laugh. Jon Stewart is the "only real voice of reason" - please. I am sure you’re a big fan of MSNBC.
Too many people get their information and think it is gospel from these types of shows - and unfortunately they remain ignorant. And this is why we are in so much trouble.
As for David Knowles - the right wing blogs are nearly not as hateful as the left. Daily KO's, Huffington Post are the worst. Not even close. You are doing a diservice to the people that post on this blog by staying sooooo one sided. But I guess that is your point.

Wow! You are filled with some rare form of angst. You obviously do not watch Mr. O'Reilly, but, rather are quoting some form of Daily KOS-esque offering. Actually, Bill does admit when he has made a qualitative or factual mistake. He does not apologize, and he shouldn't, for calling a spade a spade or for presenting the facts. The problem with folks like you is that the truth is hard for you to hear, mostly because you've been fed the Liberal line of crap (over and over and over) and you have fallen in love with their version of the story. The next time you want to perform vilification (look it up) of someone telling the truth, do a little research. I have and it's a wonderful thing to be able to justify the truth by learning what the truth is. You will certainly not hear the truth from the left side of the aisle - not often, anyway.

Anyone who listens to O'Reilly should check themselves into a mental hospital. This man sprews hate and just rants on and on. If he represents the republicans, no wonder they are falling apart.

You have no idea who or what Bill O'Reilly is about. His concern for true victims, children, the military is second to none. Just another left-wing loon who has no idea what he is talking about. The far-left spews hate 10-1, that's why O'Reilly wipes up anything remotely related to the far-left media or left in general. Give us some examples, but of course, you have none!

Far right??? Not even. I am a conservative, right of center. I am a capitalist. I find liberalism, progressivism, socialism, to be unrealistic and destructive to our country. If you think that Bill O'Rielly represents my "far right" conservative views you're wrong. I probably agree with him maybe 60% of the time. The rest of the time he promotes your misguided liberal ideas. And John Stewart??? Very funny.
