More Burgers For Obama

For a man regularly photographed topless, President Obama hits the burger joints with surprising frequency.

Today's White House burger run ended up near the Washington Nationals stadium, at Five Guys in Southeast Washington, where the president called out to the Five Guys staff, "I need one cheeseburger and one fries for me. Jalapeno, tomato, mustard. That's it for me ... Plus lettuce on mine too."

After he placed the rest of the orders for his crew and paid the bill in cash, Obama worked the lunch crowd, greeting surprised patrons and posing for pictures. At one point, the pool reporter traveling with the president overheard Obama saying in conversation, "Didn't know the economy was going to collapse."

With two brown sacks of burgers and fries in hand, the president hopped back in the motorcade, trailed by his Secret Service agents and a camera crew, and returned to the White House.

During Robert Gibbs' press briefing shortly thereafter, a CBS reporter suggested the humble takeout might have been for the benefit of an NBC news crew shadowing the president. The reporter asked Gibbs, "Can't he get a burger in this building?"

Gibbs responded, "I assure you, it was done soley for the appetite of the Commander-in-Chief."

We warned you it was a slow news day.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.
